Re: What is the difference in suspensions... (Black_C5)
FE1 is the base suspension. z51 is an optional upgrade - it has stiffer shocks, thicker sway bars, and a power steering cooler. the Z06 is the next step up, obviously not available on coupes/verts - it has a thicker front sway bar than the z51 and the same rear bar, as well as upgraded shocks. handling improves up the line. :seeya
Re: What is the difference in suspensions... (Black_C5)
Is the power steering cooler something really needed or more depending on if your road racing or something...
Have u ever road in a car with the FE1? I see you have the Z51, mine handles so awesome I cant emagine it getting any better! LOL
Thanks for the help!
I'm not too sure about the power steering cooler. For hard core auto-x, then maybe it is important. But I doubt it for normal or even spirited use.
And actually - the car I test drove before the one I bought was nearly identical (even the speedway white part) except for the Z51 and it had BSMs. The z51 car I drive now has less body roll and rides a bit stiffer. I didn't get to test drive the non z51 long enough to accurately comment much further. Again - probably not significantly different for everyday use - but when you get into it - there is clearly a difference. :seeya
Re: What is the difference in suspensions... (Black_C5)
Well there are several configurations out there ranging from Base FE1, to F45 (adjustable ride), Z51, and the Z06. You can mod any one of them to be as good as any other. I have had the FX3 (Adjustable Ride) on a 1993, the Z51 on the C5, and the FE4 on the Z06. There is a difference between the Z06 Fixed Roof Coup, and the others to a slight degree. But it has more to do with the stiff structure of the body moreso than the suspension.
But it ultimately comes down to what you are going to do with it. The Z06 is only going to be useful if you are road racing the car. It's not something that you are going to utilize on the street or notice unless you are cornering like a crazy person:-)

muhahahaha :reddevil :reddevil
I was getting on the freeway just a couple days ago (I love taking corners!), and was corning so hard the back end started to slide. Altough I believe the ground was a tade bit wet on that last part coming around that bad boy.
I dont always take them hella fast though. But if I happen to come across some sway bars that are cheap I might scoupe them up. Then again the suspension is fine as it is...

You're right that the Z06 has a stiffer structure than the Coupe or the Vert, and that you can't safely utilize the Z06's capablities on the street, but 99 percent of C5 drivers probably could not safely utilize the full capablitiies of a stock FE1 suspended C5 on the street let alone a Z06.
The Z06 has a significantly different suspension under it than the standard suspension found in the Coupes and Verts. First the springs are higher rates, second the stablilizer bars (most call them sway bars) are larger and stiffer than std, third the shock absorbers are tuned to the other suspension parts and have stiffer compression and rebound specs. Last and one of the most important elements to making the Z06 an exceptionally great handeling car, right from the factory are the Goodyear Super Car Tires. A good race driver in a Z06 would be significantly faster on a road course than the same driver in a standard Coupe, even if the engines were tuned to produce the same horsepower. This is not to say that the standard Coupe is not a very good handeling car and that it would be able to out perform many other socalled "sports cars". It's just the the Z06 is superior in the handeling department because of the above mentioned elements.
