Well my C5s sending unit/fuel gauge did it to me again yesterday. I took it out yesterday with top down to cruise some new highways in our area while stretching its legs. Haven't had it out in a couple of weeks. But the tank was showing 1/2 tank of fuel along with HUD (heads up display). I must have traveled twenty miles round trip at least.
On pulling back into drive...suddenly the "CHECK GAUGES" LED came on and sure enough...both fuel gauge on instrument panel and HUD showed NO fuel along with warning lights and everything else. What goes and what's the fix?
From what I've read here, the fix is to take it to the dealer and have the sender unit replaced, again and again. Mine did that too, but seems to have recovered for the time being. Some here believe it's due to sulfur in gasoline. Who knows?
I have the same problem every month or so. I just stop and put in 5.00 in gas the gage will then go back to the normal reading. I just did not want to take it to the dealer. I use the trip meter so I know how many miles I have on each tank of gas so when it does drop to empty I know I should still have plenty of gas.
