Default Mass Air Flow Sensor help

I keep getting a history code for P0101 MAF (mass airflow system performance) that’ll pop up randomly. It was coming on about every few miles, I’d reset it, and it would go away, and then come back on every few miles again.

ended up taking it out and cleaning it with MAF Cleaner and it stayed off for about 2 weeks, but just came back on again.

it’s just an H code (history), has no C (Current) next to it. No other codes either.

Is there somewhere I should start with fixing the problem of that history code popping on randomly or should I just try cleaning it again? It sets of the check engine light until I reset it again.

it’s just my fun car, not driven everyday so I doubt it could’ve gotten “dirty” again. 04 C5
Thanks!

Do you have the factory airbox or do you have an aftermarket filter setup? The reason I ask is that I started to receive the P0101 code randomly but mostly associated with aggressive driving (HPDE events) and I do have an aftermarket air filter. I did a LOT of searching and did not find a lot of info however I did stumble upon a thread (somewhere) that suggested that the MAF sensor can get inconsistent readings when using an aftermarket filter due to an increase of turbulence of the high flow filter with the solution being a Halltech Honeycomb Flow Straightener. Halltech Honeycomb™1/8" Cell Laminar Flow Straightener (halltechsystems.com)

I purchased it and have not had the code show up again (knocking on wood) and I have been to 1 HPDE event too. Did it fix my issue? I think so but still a little early for me to say conclusively. If you have an aftermarket air filter, you may want to try it. If you still have the stock airbox, I think you have something else going on. Good Luck!

i do have the stock air box. Only thing not stock on the car is a borla cat back. I was having issues with the MAF before Installed that. It does seem to come on under more aggressive driving. I don’t really floor it anywhere but I’ll get on it a little bit getting onto the highway or an open road. Could be possible they replaced the actual filter with something, I’ll have to take a look. Just purchased the car 2 weeks ago.

I had a similar experience with an air filter that advertised restricted all contaminants. After install in my stock air box, I had a code show up. I reinstalled a OME clean filter and the code went away. Maybe to much filtering is the problem?

Looking at the air box, it may have a FRAM Air filter in it. Do you by chance know the color of the OEM filter? Mine has a bright orange seal around it. looks like a FRAM product to me.

Had a similar repeating problem on a C4 and finally just ended up replacing the MAF sensor to fix.

It was a WIX Filter. Has orange sides and cream filter material like the FRAM does but does not have the FRAM metal screening. This summer just to see if it could be the filter, I will install the WIX filter again.
