A friend had the differential of her '00 coupe fail recently. It started making a loud noise and then a racket. She got it to the dealership within a couple miles. The dealership replaced the diff. under warranty but didn't give her much of an explanation of the failure. The car has about 35,000 miles on it. Has anyone else had this problem? I did a search, but didn't find anything.
TIA for your responses.
No problems with mine after 34,000 miles that includes many thousands of on track miles. I change the differential lubricant SAE75-90 Syntetic about every 6 months. She may have just gotten a flawed diff from the factory or it could have been mistreated a some point in it's life.
Did it run dry and she not notice? There have been a significant number of leaks from the seals back there to consider than an unnoticed leak could have led to the failure?
Hmmm. Just had mine replaced on a '00 with about 30k. Ring and pinion wear is what the dealer told me. That was the best the service guy could do. Same symptom, increasingly loud whiny/growly sound. I thought it was a wheel bearing, but the diff fix took care of it.
She didn't run dry and had no leaks. The car is parked in the same spot in her garage every day and the floor has always been dry. The car has never been raced and had the original factory fill in it when it failed.
There was no issue with the dealer replacing the diff under waranty.
We're just trying to find out if this is an isolated incident or a more common problem. And offer a heads up in case this happens to you.
I ran mine very easy for the first 500 miles, not over 50 mph. The fluid was changed w/leaking rear seals leaking at 20,000. Only fact. lube and serviced by Local dealer,, 99 is quiet and quick,, Hi Per fatory Option axle.

Re: Differentail Failure (Umrswimr)
I had one for 58,000 and raced it a ton at events. When I replaced it two brand new ones went bad in less than 400 miles with no abuse what so ever  Ring and pinion shimmed wrong :cry
