Default cooling fan 2001 zo6

Cooling fan for engine fan not working unless AC is on then both fans work with the AC fan blowing more air. Any idea what could be wrong car has 27k miles on it and no mods.

What is your coolant temp? If I recall primary fan turns on at 230°, and secondary around 238°. I'm not a fan of it but these cars were set up to run pretty hot. When AC is on primary stays on, and if you idle up to 230 primary will kick on long enough to drop temps some. It will cycle on and off as temps rise and fall.

On C5's both fans come on in low-speed mode when lower engine temp is reached, then both fans go to high-speed mode when the upper high temp is reached, and yes both fans come on when the AC is turned on. Your car may simply not be reaching the temp set points. The fans operation is controlled by the pcm which has an engine temp sensor as it's input and then powers the fan relays in a series configuration 'slow speed' or parallel configuration 'high speed'.

If you idle the car, does the coolant temp rise and rise and rise to infinity? Does it hit 210, 215, 220, 225, 230, 235F, etc, without anything happening? I would be willing to get it to about 235-240F before you shut your engine off, to test this out.

Or does it just get to (eg) 210F and you get cold feet and turn it off?

Here's the fan operation right from the factory service manual :
FSMFactory fan temp settings are low speed on at 226 degrees and off at 219 degrees. High speed on at
235 degrees and revert to low speed at 226 degrees. As stated both fans run at low speed and high
speed and fans are commanded off by the PCM when the vehicle speed exceeds 35mph.
You can force low speed operation at 185 degrees by turning on the AC. High speed operation with
AC on is still 235 degrees.

My 2000 the A/C button comes on and flashes than goes off, no cold air comes out and can’t hear compressor click on. Haven’t messed with it mainly because it’s a top down car mostly and don’t want to spend the cash to have it looked.
