I was backing out of the driveway today and the brakes felt a bit odd. Like less pressure but still working. Then the pedal went to the floor. Brakes still working but the pedal was very loose. With the pedal to the floor they only lightly stop the car.
Smoke then started pouring out from under the hood, near the firewall, driver side. The master cylinder doesn't look like it's leaking but the reservoir is empty and the bottom of the headers have some drips..
Suggestions on where to start? It looked like the smoke was coming from brake fluid leaking onto the headers, but again, the master cylinder doesn't look to have any leaks around it. I haven't gotten under the car yet.
edit: 1998
After getting under the car, its leaking brake fluid somewhere underneath bit I cant tell exactly where.

It sounds like you blew a brake line or hose. Refill the master cylinder (put the cap back on) and have someone pump the brakes while you look under the hood. Rinse the car really thoroughly when done.

I'm thinking the same thing. After a closer look, the master cylinder and area around it are dry but there's some sort of liquid on the headers right under the firewall. probably a line..
Its leaking down right where the headers meet the cats.. are the brake lines running through there as well? Having a hard time getting that far under it in the garage
How would I diagnose that? take the master off and check for bad seals somewhere?
This actually happened to my sons Tacoma. It was losing brake fluid, it has to be going somewhere. It was leaking past the plunger on the master into the booster. It was obvious once I removed the master from the booster.
I think i found my problem. Fluid is all over everything here. On the walls and surfaces, dripping off the fuel lines (i think those are the braided lines)
Are those small lines the brake lines? If so, i believe the rusted one may be busted..
This is in the trans tunnel above the exhaust pipess
