I am in the process of buying an Amsoil foam air filter and I was reading a few old posts about installing a Blackwing as this is an enormous improvement over the old style of housing for the early C5's. Since my vette is a 2003, have there been improvements in this housing or I do also need to buy the Blackwing?
No improvements, but you don't need to do anything. IMO the BW is the best filter and bang for the buck. I have the carbon fiber Halltech, it's very cool.
If you don't want to spend a lot of money, consider the 2002 Z06 Air Filter Cover. It's about $50 and has a sizable hole in front. If you aren't modded beyond 405 HP, it should work fine.
Oh, to answer your question. Early (97-98, maybe longer) C5s had no hole in air filter cover. I know that 2001 LS1 have small hole in cover. 2002 LS6 has large hole in cover. All covers get air from ducts that go down close to radiator shroud. Believe this was done to prevent water ingestion.
Your Amsoil or K&N filters will flow just fine, so you don't :need" the Blackwing. You might consider modifying the filter lid, if you are not afraid of water ingestion. A search will produce many posts on this topic. Good luck and enjoy the back roads of Illinois! :yesnod: :) :steering:
I have the Blackwing. It came with the car. From what I have read, it is the best filter going. If you want a Z06 filter housing with the hole in the cover, you can have mine for the cost of shipping.
