Default 2000 corvette fuel gauge issue

I bought a 2000 c5 corvette hard top convertible from a guy who bought it new and rarely used it. It has around 30,000 miles. Everything runs well on the car just had to replace the alternator and the ac compressor. Ever since I bought it when I go on long trips after the first hour of straight driving the fuel gauge needle goes from full to empty in an instant and it will stay like that for a while until I turn on and off the car a few times. It only happens after like an hour+ of straight driving. Does anyone have any suggestions what it can be?

Most likely fuel tank sending unit has build up of deposits, very common problem on our cars. Run a couple of Techron complete fuel system cleaner on your next fill ups and use only top tier primeium gasoline.

^^ what he said. techron or Seafoam in the tank solves the issues the majority of the time.

May take a few tankfuls with techron. I always add techron to the tank before final fill before winter storage as well. No issues any longer...

Key is don't give up on Techron too soon. Took me 5 or 6 bottles, driving from Michigan to Florida. Didn't help until the last 2 bottles and almost to the Florida border. Good ever since.....

After adding Techron let the car sit for a week or so it won't work very well if you fill up the car and proced to use the car and use up the treated fuel.

I replaced the two fuel sending units, even did a full fuel system clean at the Chevy Dealership. It fixed my problem and i'm sitting at 150k miles. Hitting it with some Techron or Seafoam like the guys said doesn't hurt to try man!

Good point!! By keeping my tank mostly full for nearly 1,300 miles, it gave the stuff time to work, and I'm glad I didn't give up too easily! Probably the best way is what you're saying. Put a bottle, or two in the tank(s), fill it to the brim, and drive the car sparingly, say 5 or 10 miles every other day......

This is not a scientific test, but Shell Premium seems to work best in my 99. Exxon is also very good.
