My 1998 C5 Vert, auto trans, has 53K miles on it. When I start it up it runs fine, but when I put it into gear, any gear, the engine dies. Any thoughts on what could be wrong?

you might be experiencing the 2 mph fuel shut off, you might have to install a LMC5 column lock bypass, or have a tunner change the 2 mph to 200 mph.
After I parked the car for a week, came back out to try to noodle out the problem and........it ran fine both in and out of gear. Drove it over to the shop for a check-out, but everything ran fine. I hate phantom problems like this because you never know when it'll raise it's ugly head again!
Also could be the theft deterrent relay or the ignition switch. The TDR is an easy do it yourself fix if that is the case.
The ignition switch contacts become burned over time and begin making contact MOST of the time. An early, but one of MANY symptoms can be the engine dying any time typically at a stop sign, and then shut down and OK restart.

I hear you on the morning glory/phantom problems. I have a right turn signal hyperflashing problem that is never a problem when anyone looks at it. It is somehow heat related. It never does it when its cooler weather outside, say 65°-70°. But drive around town in 85° weather, and after about 45 minutes of driving, it happens. Of course, if you take it in to the shop for diagnostics, you drop it off. Next morning when shop looks at it, car isn't warmed up with exhaust pipes, engine, etc, so then it works fine!!!
