Yes, you have a grommet that failed on the shift cable. Most likely it is the one at the shifter end. Though it could also be the transmission end. Have seen both ends fail.
You will need to remove the center console and radio surround to get to the mounting bolts for the shifter. There are instructions out there on how to do this.

I had the same issue in my ‘03. Found this video showing how to replace the shifter cable from underneath, so you DON’T have to touch/remove ANYTHING on the inside.
I gave the video to my mechanic and he made it happen!!
