Default AC actuator door indexing?

Hey guys. I'm spending this long weekend tackling some long time nuisance problems. One of the problems on the list was my DS vent door actuator. I've been reading a bunch of the threads in the section about these actuators but one thing I haven't figured out. There's a lot of talk about "indexing" the actuator, but I've seen reference to the 2001 and up models not requiring indexing. Lots of good information in this section but people sometimes omit the years and options they're working with.

I have a 2001 with the dual zone and I'm installing a brand new Four Seasons actuator (my factory actuator had the notorious crack). Will I need to index this? If I've read the threads correctly, the 2001+ models will automatically find and set the travel limits. Correct?

2001+ should re-calibrate as you mentioned. I would install and see how it goes first.

Ya. I got it in and everything reassembled yesterday. Door works now. But now I know I must have a leak because I'm out of refrigerant.

In order to reindex the actuators you have to pull some fuses. Give it a google search. they will come up. Ive reindexed mind a few times and that always fixes the codes for me. very common problem for a c5.

The question is whether this is necessary for certain years. From what I'm reading, my '01 shouldn't need it. I removed the fuse 27 for about 10 minutes after reassembling everything. Looks like the doors are working fine. Just turns out I have a leak and lost all my refrigerant.

i understand the question and provided you an answer. All years need reindexing. Checking for leaks should have been done first before even looking at the actuators. Always start with the obvious easiest answer first.

The actuator door has been a known problem for a number of years.

Your A/C system could be perfect, but it wont seem like it if the actuators arent working correctly. At 20+ years old, nothing wrong with replacing the actuators, because if they haven't failed yet, they will, and sooner than later.....

drivers side I would agree with you. But I wouldn’t touch the passenger side. Those rarely if ever break. Dash needs to come out for that side too. Not an easy job. However, reindexing a few times has been known to cure an actuator code and fix the issue.
