Imagine it’s 5am and suddenly your horn starts blowing. I removed the fuse to stop it but don’t know why it happened. Any help in identifying or indicating what might have caused this appreciated. Thanks folks.

You may want to post this in the tech section. There are various known horn issues like the membrane or relay, but none of those would make the horn randomly just go off and not stop.
Not sure if this is your issue, but while on a consulting assignment, when locking the doors of the rental vehicle, a new BMW's theft alarm would go off in the parking lot. The owner would come out, look around and stop the alarm. Over the next 5 days, I had a lot fun with that BMW's owner. He never saw me doing the entertainment. I know, I am bad.
i dont know but my exhaust sets off a buddys 99 z28 alarm or flashing lights when i start the car in the evening next to it. There is less environment noise from traffic during the evening then there is the day. I had the same thing happen when i reconnect the battery the alarm sometimes randomly goes off honking.
If you take the airbag off the steering wheel (you can leave the airbag wire connected), which is held on by 2 Torx-head screws from the backside of the steering wheel, there will be 2 additional wires for the horn. With a multimeter you can check continuity across these wires with the horn membrane pressed and the horn membrane not pressed. If the multimeter shows a short regardless of the horn membrane position, then it will be as @MWWarlord & @feeder82 said.
Least you have a working horn. Mine has gone out and could of used it when an idiot walked on the road because they crashed their car on the turning lane at PCH. She got lucky I was paying attention.
Same thing happened to me. It was the horn membrane. It is part of the air bag module. GM does not sell just the needed membrane, they only sell the entire aIRBAG MODULE FOR ABOUT $900.00. i BOUGHT THE "Horn Button Contact Assembly" from Corvette Parts & Accessories, Mustang, Camaro, Challenger | RPIDesigns . It was $68.99+ tax when I got it in January of this year. Prices has gone up a little, but still cheaper than GM.

Agree with the above. Its likely the horn membrane. Original owner of my 99 and this happened to me about 6 years into ownership.
Glad there was someone with a problem that I knew the solution to and was able to help. Now if someone can just steer me to a solution to my DIC issue which I have posted about.

Oh but it will. Mine went off at 4 in the morning. One long solid blast of the horn until I pulled the fuse. When the membrane in the wheel fails, it will let you know and the surrounding neighbors know.
Why do they all seem to fail in the middle of the night? Mine went off at 2:30 AM, my neighbor called to tell me my horn was constantly blowing. I was sleeping and never heard it.
