I just did a fresh oil change over the weekend. I did not drive the car much afterwards until this morning. It's already 85 degrees F this morning. This warning message came up as I was shutting the car off after maybe 30-45 minutes of city driving in light to normal traffic. Would like to hear from others about this warning. Is this another known problem I'm just finding out about? bad temp sensor?
The only other thing worth mentioning is that I had trouble seeing the dipstick reading, so there is a tiny possibility I have over filled. At 6.5 quarts I just could not tell if it needed a bit more. The filter was only about 80% full when I installed it. So if I over filled it isn't by much. Also, I did raise the rear of the car up higher than the front to get as much old oil out as possible.
Does the type of oil used have anything to do with this message? It's Mobil 1 high mileage 5w30. Yes I saw the thread warning not to use that oil, but unfortunately too late.
For now I'll monitor to see if this comes up again or if it's a one time thing.
I use Mobil 1 High Mileage full synthetic 5W30. My 2004 runs perfectly with it and the engine is quieter. Actually the High Mileage formula is closer to the Mobil 1 that was used as factory fill for the C5 model. What thread are you referring to, to not use Mobil 1 High Mileage full synthetic? Also, there are a number of forum members that put 7 quarts of oil in after the oil has been drained and the oil filter replaced.
Next time you drive the car pay attention to what the oil temperature is via the DIC before starting the engine. Monitor it as your driving and see how high it goes. My engine oil temp is usually just about 10 degrees above the water temp when it's over 90 degrees out.

Any ideas?
Running Mobil 1 5w-30 regular, or hi mileage, will do absolutely nothing to absolutely anything. Anyone who tells you otherwise gives you the diplomatic chance of never listening to anything they say again that is mechanically related. There are probably better oils, but a whole lot more worse ones. As for the high oil temp, the sending unit may be going out. Id try changing it first, before jumping to any more expensive conclusions......
You're missing the most critical bit of information here-- what was the sensor reading? The wiring for it runs near the left exhaust manifold. If you have aftermarket headers, especially long tubes, it can melt that wiring and cause a fault, which can read off-scale high. The type of oil is completely irrelevant.
If the water temperature is in the normal range, and the oil temperature is reading unrealistically high it's almost certainly a sensor or wiring issue. We really need to know what it's reading before we can help with diagnosis though.
You need to do laps on a road course to get the oil hot. I've had it over 300 before and not gotten a warning, so there's no way yours is actually hot. Going to be a sensor/wiring issue like everyone else has stated.
Thanks all, will monitor temps via DIC. I don't have headers, so based on comments, it sounds like the sensor is heading toward failure or already has failed. Youtube told me where this is located and how you change it. I'm guessing oil pours out when you remove it.

yeah… I literally just changed the oil, wish I saw this issue while it was already drained out. If I can hold on until next oil change that would be ideal. We shall see.
I don't think oil is going to pour out when you pull that sensor. You may get a few drips, but that should be it. It's in the pressurized circuit, so pan level should be irrelevant.
Ok it was a fluke that one day I guess. Oil temp of 235 degrees F is what I saw today during similar driving as the time when the warning came up. Water temp was similar.
