Default Steering column lock question

I have read many posts on this a have a question I can’t find. Mine is a 2000 6-speed manual and I can turn the steering wheel with the key out and shut down. Does this mean the locking device was totally removed or it just have the bypass installed.
Thanks

It could mean a couple of things. Chevrolet tried (yes, tried) to provide a recall solution to the column lock problem. It really did not do the job,

Most C5 owners have installed a LCM5 and this solves the problem.

Order the device here: http://www.complianceparts.com/

This is the best 40 bucks you ever spent on your car.

Mostly it was bypassed, no easy way to tell if the locking mechanism was removed unless you pull the steering wheel and column.

I've owned my 99 since new. I had the bypass installed and the locking mechanism removed under warranty/recall. Over the years I would still get the error message when battery would get low. I installed the LMC5 a few years later with the brown wire mod and haven't had the issue in 10+ years.

LMC5 is the way to go even if the other recalls were performed.

Is yours a manual or automatic, if found in my vin check the locking device was replaced two times in the early 2000 but didn’t say removed. I read something about only removed them in automatics. It has the LMC5 installed without the brown wire mod but haven’t seen the message in a long time. Thanks

They make C5s in automatic? Just playing A4 guys.
Mine is an MN6. The dealership removed the locking plate on my car after multiple failed attempts to resolve. I may have demanded they do so, but I can't recall.

When I first did the LMC5 without the brown wire mod the issue did come back. After the BWM I haven't had an issue in years.

Rpi parts sells a similar steering column lock mechanism bypass module it plugs in under the dash i think rpiprts wants 80$ for it but on ebay i saw it for 40$. Someone ran my vin on here which said mine had the steering column lock recall performed. Hopefully they removed the locking mechanism plates or pins as my column stays unlocked. I have the lmc5 installed as well but eventually got "steering column locked" message directly after and 2mph fuel cut. I had the tuner change the column lock vss fuel cut from 2 to 200mph.
C5 Corvette Steering Column Lock Bypass - RPIDesigns.com This may be better then the lmc5 as it plug directly into the plug under the steering column without messing with the bcm but not too sure if anyone has used this or had experience with it.
Its 40$ on ebay 1997-2004 C5 CORVETTE THE ORIGINAL STEERING COLUMN LOCK BYPASS | eBay
Maybe someone can run your vin for recalls to check if the service column lock TSB has been performed on the car. I think mine had said it was performed in 2000 or early 2000s its a 99 model auto.
Frost tuning had mentioned purchasing a steering column lock bypass module didnt mention the lmc5 not any specific module but a c5 column lock bypass module. Im wondering if this other underdash module is better then the lmc5.

My vin run shows the lock was replaced two times in the early 2000 and something about a harness. Don’t know if they finally removed it or what. You can turn the steering wheel freely with the key out and has the LMC5 installed without the brown wire mod. Have had no problems except seeing the pull key and wait 10 seconds, no fuel shut off. Don’t want to get stranded but again not sure if I should mess with it. Thanks for your help

Brown wire mod is a 2 minute task and a song as you do it correctly wont mess anything up. That pull key wait 10 seconds issue will go away post the BWM.

Ok...I installed the LMC5 2 days ago. I then pulled out the battery and cleaned the 3 grounds under the hood. Put the battery back with battery tender. Today I started the Vette (2001) and got the pull key for ten seconds 2 times. I pulled out the key for 5 seconds and turned it to on but not starting. I did that about 15 times and the pull key alert hasnt happened since.

My question will the brown wire mod cause problems if I don't really need it?

I do not believe so...but who's to say "you don't really need it"? Are you basing that on the above "test"?

I've owned my C5 for 24 years. It's had every column lock fix provided by the dealer. Including the removal of the locking plate. The only time the issue fully went away was post the LMC5 and BWM.

If you have concerns about the Brown Wire Mod you can always call Richard at Compliance Parts for Q&A/ peace of mind.

Yes, I'll give him a call. I'm trying to get ready for the Blue Ridge Parkway October 9th. So I don't want any problems I can solve right here at home.
