Default Kooks made 2 different style LTs!!!!

Well, I've run into a problem with my "old style" Kooks LTs. First off, I called Kooks, and they can't remember the install/removal procedure for the old style. On the new style, both sides install from below. Also, I did not even know Kooks changed their LTs 8 or 9 years ago. I need some advice from guys who have the old style. If you have 2 bolts on your collectors, that hold your X-pipe to the headers, you have the old style. I need all the help I can get, because I have nobody to help, which compounds the problem. I need to remove both sides. The best the guy at Kooks could do was tell me that, on the old style, one side goes in from above, and one side goes in from below. But he couldn't remember which was which!! At my age, things arent as easy as they once were, and I don't want to struggle by myself with this. Anyone out there know for sure which side goes in from below, and which side from above? If I had to guess, and I don't want to, I'd say drivers side goes in from below, and passenger side from above. Does anyone know/remember? I can't remember, because they've been on there for at least the last 8 years, and I put them on when I had the body up off the drivetrain, so even that is redundant. Thanks guys.......

No experience but this says they go in from the top, so must be the old style instructions.

Thank you very much!!! So, no wonder they wouldn't come down!! The newer style (which has 3 bolt flanges rather than the older style, which have two), goes up, and in from below. Just the opposite from the old ones. Now I see where Kooks got the PITA install reputation, and probably why the design change happened. Sounds like I've got my work cut out for me, but at least I've got a good direction to follow. Again, thank you very much!!!!!

No problem, I searched and found older threads here on CF people saying how horrible they are to install, and recall hearing this brand is easy to install.

Why do you have to remove them?

They fit real nice once there in there though! Lol!
Be sure to remember to keep one side loosely bolted in then attach to the xpipe. Youll be cranky if you don't.

Thanks Johnny. Yeah, no wonder I may have invented a few new cuss words last year when I tried to get them off the car!!! I remember one was ****-a-roonie, Ronnie, even though nobody named Ronnie was out there with me!! My wife walked in just as I said it, and asked "what did you say??" It didnt help though. Anyway, I called Kooks, and they said they install from the bottom, so they come back out the bottom when removed. Logical. Well-Uh, not if you have the early, 2 bolt flange style, like me. I was unaware they'd made a change, and the tech at Kooks thought I had just bought them.....NOT!!!

I want to coat them with a high temp, Jet-Hot type coating. Since my car is Torch Red, I'm thinking about having them coated red, but that's still up in the air......like the car!!!

Make sure whoever you choose coats the headers inside and out. Some only do the outsides.

Good point. I wonder if the test I saw did both? I'm betting they weren't coated inside. Thanks for the tip!

I guess I’m lazy, I would talk myself out of doing all that work, unless it was damaging things on the car from not being coated.

Keep us updated, maybe pics of headers inside and out before and after coating?

Curious about pricing as well, want to buy speed engineering headers and curious how much it would be to coat them.

I’ve had headers coated similar to JetHot before. the default at that time was both inside and outside coating - which means make sure they mask flange faces and bolt holes, etc.
The difference in radiant heat was remarkable, well worth the expense and trouble. That said, the coating used (no longer in business) stained easily.

Thats why bright colors can be sketchy. I went with the polished silver or black for that reason.

Im not saying don’t get red if that’s what you really want, just be aware …

Can headers be coated inside when you've put 70,000 miles on them? Just asking, because IDK....

Ive had heavily used headers recoated. There’s a device that runs down the tube and blasts it, like a straw.. That’s the same way they spray the coating.

Kooks did change the design of the headers several years back. I had the original design on my old FRC and my current C5Z came with them. A friend has the new design and they are much easier to install and uninstall.

I believe the mid pipes did change, something to consider if buying used parts.
