I haven’t drivin my 99’ in about a year. I just put a new battery in yesterday and it started right up. I took it for a ride and it drove great. This morning I went for an inspection but they were closed. I came home checked all the gauges and everything was normal. I turned it off went in the house to get cleaning supplies to do the interior and came out. I went to start it to put on music and it just cranks and won’t turn over. Any suggestions? It’s just parked in the driveway now. It’s raining so tough to look under the hood. Could a terminal be lose? I don’t even really know where to start but there. Not much info because I never had this issue before.
Just to clear up the terminology it cranks but won’t start ??…”turning over” is the same as cranking….if it’s cranking or turning over do you hear the fuel pump turn on for 2 seconds when the key is on ??…how about when it cranks do you see the Tach move during cranking ??…this may signify a bad crank sensor…you can try spraying Brake Kleen or starter fluid into the brake booster fitting going into the intake manifold or at the PCV and see if the car attempts to start…if it tries to start you have a fuel delivery issue…pump or injectors. You can remove the fuel rail cap on the front of the left fuel rail and take a small screwdriver and depress the Shrader valve and see if you get a good stream of fuel coming out after the key is cycled on and then off…use a rag when doing this so you don’t get fuel all over the engine.
The very first thing to check is fuel pressure, you have to verify that you have around 60 psi at the fuel rail, do you have tachometer movement while the engine is turning over, if no movement it could be the crank position sensor.
So it finally started after a few days of sitting. I didn’t turn it off and took it to my mechanic. Their looking it over. I have a coolant leak too. They did a pressure test and didn’t find anything. Maybe the water pump? Also it says low oil every now and then so I’m having it looked at
I would just have them check the things that are actually wrong with it right now…look at the oil level and also the oil level sensor and wiring…if there is a coolant leak well there is a leak somewhere…let them try to locate it…it’s hard to diagnose your starting issue if it’s fine now…have them do a full scan of all modules looking for current DTC’s.
Ok. Thanks. They said the water pump looks new and doesn’t have any fluid near it but it seems to drip near the drivers side front tire. They are checking hoses now
They replaced a hose and clamp. I drove it for a week back and forth to work about an hour each way and went through a tank of gas. I got low coolant again on the dash. I filled it up and dropped it off again. They didn’t see any leaks and did a pressure test with 50 psi for an hour and didn’t see any leaks. He said it could have been an air bubble. I hope it was but it took about a jug of coolant. I don’t see any coolant on the ground in the driveway.
Could it be the head gasket? Has anyone heard them going on a 99’ with 98k miles?
I had them run a reader to check codes and there were 2 new ones that came up since I replaced the battery last Friday. A cam position sensor and one other sensor I can’t remember. I’ll find out today when he gets in he wasn’t there when I picked it up. This guy is good he always fixes my cars and has been in business for over 30 years. I deal with the owner and only he works on my cars. He owns a 2008 corvette so he’s familiar with them. Do you think the starting issue is related to the cam position sensor? Or is it telling me I have a problem with the cam?
I’ll give more info on the codes when he calls me back.
A faulty cam position sensor will cause a longer crank but the car will eventually start…it is NOT a bad camshaft !!…your mechanic if he is a Corvette owner should know this…a crank position sensor however is needed for the car to start…find out the other code…if you are losing coolant with no external leak it is most likely a defective head gasket…if your shop doesn’t have or use an oscilloscope they are only guessing trying to diagnose these sensors and it’s a good way to diagnose your head gasket…they should also be doing a compression test but with a scope it only takes 2 minutes instead of removing plugs which takes more time and cost you more money in labor costs…you can do a “relative compression test” just sitting in the drivers seat…don’t even have to open the hood.

thanks. There is an external leak still I found coolant in the driveway this morning.
he didn’t say bad camshaft. I didn’t know if the sensor was picking up a problem and it’s more than just a sensor.
the car does start it just takes 2 or 3 turns of the key.
Ok, just saw your last post…well I guess they will have to find this external leak first and then concentrate on the camshaft code and see what the other one was…good luck !!
The sensors are on order. Should be in next week. Should I keep driving it or park it until they come in? I could leave it with him to find the leak and really look it over on Monday.
With that external leak I probably wouldn’t drive the car or you WILL have a blown head gasket if the engine overheats…better to be safe than sorry…what was the other code ??….you said “sensors”….what was the other sensor they ordered ??…do you see where it may have been leaking from ??…it’s a good idea to pressurize the coolant system with a cold engine

He pressurized it with a cold engine and nothing was found. He showed me the leak and replaced the hose and clamp. I don’t see where it’s coming from now. I’ll park it until Monday and drop it off for the week and let him drive it and work on it then when the sensors come in on Wednesday I’ll have those replaced. I’m still waiting for him to call me back about the other sensor I can’t remember which it was.
Well I hope they ordered OEM sensors and not junk aftermarket such as Dorman for instance...you should ask them to verify you'll be getting OEM...seen many issues here with aftermarket sensors...make sure they check the wiring on these sensors before they install a new one or ones...power, ground, and signal...even with a new sensor using a scope to make sure it is working properly is essential...this is what a good cam sensor looks like with a scope (red trace)...blue is the crank sensor...they should verify signal is going to system voltage and fully to ground…have a great weekend !!

Hey Rob, boy, it sure seems like a lot of C5s have been having trouble starting the last couple months. Maybe it's just me......
Got the coolant leak fixed. I had a small crack on my radiator covered by a hose and a clamp. She runs about 210 degrees now 30 degrees cooler. Very nice.
the code I got was po 0332. Where can I get a gm sensor? He ordered an aftermarket sensor and I said I’ll get a gm. I don’t want to mess with aftermarket.
