Default Another headlight issue thread

So the driver motor gear on my 2004 was shot. I ordered a kit for both (cause I figured why not). It was the TR Diesel kit on amazon. Since the passenger side was good I decided to give that a shot, and found that it had been replaced at some point, however the three metal tabs that were holding the motor on were pretty loose. Loose enough that the motor actually fell off while I was replacing the gear. Put it back on, bent the tabs back in as tight as I could, everything seemed fine.

After doing the drivers side, I now have a really weird issue. If I turn the headlights on, the driver motor runs up no problem. I can see the passenger motor twitch, but no movement. If I turn the headlights off after that, the driver light comes down, but then the passenger light comes up and stays up, no matter how many times I cycle the lights.

Any ideas on this? Should I just suck it up and buy a replacement motor/housing or is there an easy fix for this I haven't found?

Edit: So research tells me the headlight motor is jamming. I'll deal with that issue later. What I'm trying to figure out now is why the passenger motor seems to be working opposite of what the driver is doing. Not sure if signals are getting crossed because it's jamming, but it honestly seems like the wiring somehow became backwards overnight.

If I were you I'd just get two new motors and be done with it

They're dirt cheap and should last you another 20 years

Im not usually one to disagree, but I would not buy the cheap motors off of eBay. I have dealt with those in the past and they last about 6-8 months and then break again. Personally, I would try and fix your oem motors.

That said, to me, it sounds like you have the arms on incorrectly ie reversed.

^ I have had these cheap ebay motors in for about 3 years now without issues.

Poking thru ebay, a pair of genuine GM motors look to cost around 5x the price of the two listed here

Oh for sure, sir. I am not arguing with you. We all have different experiences. Your experience has been good with the aftermarket ebays, while mine has been absolutely terrible.

You may have misunderstood what I said about the oem motors. I didn't recommend that he buy new ones, I recommended that he keep and fix the oem Motors that he has. In my experience, that is the best course of action. Just my two cents! Cheers sir!

^ gotcha. I only recommended them because they're very affordable and I've had good luck with them.

I've done the bronze gear replacement on my originals and ended up with a different issue where the motor itself would rotate inside it's own housing which caused the worm gear to not come into contact with the gear teeth so the headlight wouldn't raise.

New cheap ebay replacements have been good ever since

As mentioned above. Check and see if the arm is pivoted to the wrong side. May need to move it 180 degrees. My money is that the arm is not installed properly. Don't ask me how I know.

I tried that, but the headlights wouldn't come up the whole way. The pivot point is supposed to point to the front of the car right?

In either case. I got a new motor to test with, hooked it up and it works no problem. I did hear about motors switching polarity if you mess with them. I didn't really do anything major but I suppose it's a possibility

I did it wrong too …. Same problem.

The pivot (red) points to the back. You might have just got lucky on the second try…

Make sure the lower arm is behind both of the plastic stop tabs (blue) and it should be ok.

Agree with Christiantee, arm on motor reversed. Happened to me not to long ago after replacing with the brass gear.
