They usually slide out too easily as the rubber gasket gets loose over time.
Perhaps some previous person put some adhesive sealant on there and that's what's holding it tight.

X2! I think they slide out pretty easily, too. Almost pulled it out once by accident..
i have a leak and it must be the pump. it turns easily (too easily?) but wont come out. i thought i would ask before i try penetrating oil thats hard to get rid off or ruin the tank (expensive over here).
At the top of the suspect list for a leak I would put the flexible rubber gasket that seals the pump nozzle to the tank.
If the pump turns it should easily pull out. The rubber gasket comes with a replacement pump. I've never seen the gasket sold separately but it's possible.
It's also possible that there's a hidden crack near the hole for the nozzle that you wouldn't see until you removed the pump.
i got it out with a more elaborate prying set up. there was crud all over the grommet. its so loose in there that its surprising it has been tight for 20 years at all. i had some silicone tube with a 1mm wall that i managed to get over the nose of the pump. it went in with some force and now its tight. i just hope the silicone grease i used will not contaminate the fluid, but i actually cant remember having ever used the washer anyway.
i also put a few layers of tape on the sensor so its tighter in there too.
