I just bought a 2000 coupe and don't know what oil the previous owner used. I use Mobil 1 in my C4. Also what about viscosity/weight? I live in Texas so get warm days mixed with below freezing this time of year.
I run Mobil1 10W-30 year around in the PT and Tundra (and in the '99 Coupe when I owned it), Mobil1 15W-50 in the Harleys, and Castrol GTX 20W-50 in the C3. It's often over 100F here in the summer, and doesn't get much below 35F this time of year.
Use a quality filter too. Personally, I like Wix, Mobil1, K&N, Bosch Premium, AC-Delco, and SuperTech (Wal-Mart).

Mobil 1 10W 30 as it has a better VI than 5W 30 and you are not going to have weather below 0 F. Also use a Delco UPF 44 filter.
I totally agree and sign-up what "Rich in Chicago" already said (for the Oil Filter as well => UPF44, instead of PF44). Following the GM SVC Manual, you should use a minimum weight of a 5W - depending on temps, better use a 10W (this is cold viscosity index).
IMHO, I would go even one step further : if you intend to use your Car for what it is really built, some kind of very spirited, enthusiastic driving, then you might choose even a 10W-40 (GM does approve this weight for the C5).
However, you also should check to respect API "SJ" (min.) and/or ACEA A3-96, 100% synthetic.......or then the GM definition Starburst 4718M.
Good luck to you. I personally use, and this to my overall satisfaction : RED LINE HigPerformance Lubrication - from Bumper to Bumper. Engine 10W-40 -- A4-Tranny D4-ATF -- rearend 75W-90 (the latter contains already the necessary friction modifier, so no further mixing adventures necessary).
just be careful pls. Re GM SVC Manual, they do prescribe a minimum oil weight of 5W-30. Any lower could be, IMHO, a really too thin "watersoup" - may be lack of sufficient lubrication capabilities.
I think you would not want to hurt your engines internals. Keep in mind the temps within bearings and other highly critical areas of your engine. Just my .2 cents. If you really like THIN, for whatever reasons, go with with 5W-30 - this represents the possible minimum of viscosity. Good luck.
Re: recommendations on motor oil? (SwissVette_Joe)
I also use 10-30 Mobil 1
And not to steal the thread but
my Dad has an 02 Ford pickup with a
4.6 liter engine......right on the oil fill
cap it says 5w20......You could have pushed me
over with a feather.....Might as well use wd40
and hey Joe I just noticed your modified post date and time....kinda different
in another country.....regards WK
