I installed the hypertech programmer on my 2002 vert today, and had a question about how safe is it to increase the rev limiter on the LS1. I set mine at 6300 rpm but I don't want to blow the valve train someday. I have seen some forum members state they have set theirs at 6500, but does anyone have experience (mainly bad) with raising the rev limiter on the LS1?
Re: Question about max setting on rev limiter (BLU PIL)
Depends on a lot of factors, including the hardware you're running. As far as a stock long block, John Juriga, an LS1/6 engineer, had this to say about it (from Hib Halverson's "Ruthless Pursuit of Power"):
"You could run an LS1 or an LS6 to seven grand," Juriga answered, "and not immediately put a rod through the side of the block. What is a concern is how often and how long your run the engine like that. We have our durability goals that say we gotta be able to run these engines for 125,000 miles at a certain confidence level. If we had the engine running at those higher speeds, we’d have to validate the engine at the higher performance level for that period of time and that’s something we’re not ready to do right now."
Having said that, my rev limiter is set at 6950 based on the h/c package I'm running.
Re: Question about max setting on rev limiter (BLU PIL)
with 78,000 miles on the stock cam/springs my shift points were set at 6250 and 6200 - rev limiter at 6400. Never a problem and it hit the limiter quite a few times spinning the tires..
