Default Wheel Width Question

My "new" C5 came with 18" wheels on the front and 19" wheels on the rear, and they are black which I do not like. I have been looking at quite a few stock reproductions in 17" and 18" like the original skinny 5 spoke wheels. The question I have is, as most of the wheels are 9.5 and 10.5 inches wide as opposed to the factory 8.5 and 9.5 inches how much difference does that additional inch of width make as far as wheel well interference?
Thanks,
Mike

As long as they are the proper offset you won't have any issues. Most autocross and track guys run C5 Z06 rear wheels on all four corners, with tires as wide as 315/30x18. At that width there will be very slight rubbing on the front under heavy load, but nothing concerning.

The OEM Z06 wheels are 9.5 & 10.5 inches wide respectively, you should not have fitment issues if the wheels are for a C-5 and have the correct offset. With regards to most autocross and HPDE participants running a square set-up, that is not accurate. I auto crossed for may years with both the SCCA and NCCC in the stock classes which requires you to run the stock wheels and tire sizes. Modified classes will allow increased sizes and variations including a square set-up. A square set-up on a C-5 causes AH system malfunctions; there have been may discussions on this forum related to this issue over the years. I recommend you stay away from a square set-up unless you plan on driving with the AH system in the off position.

One other consideration when buying 17s and 18s, tires. Availability in those sizes has shrunk I would look into that also

I'm not sure what you have participated in lately, but most C5s are being run in modified classes these days, primarily SCCA CAM-S. Nearly everyone that I see is running a square setup. The AH "problem" thing is a myth from my experience, both with my own car and from others. I've never, not once, not a single time had AH issues in autocross, race track, or street driving with a square setup. Not a single time. This is in all modes, not just "TC/AH off".

Thanks for the responses guys. The black wheels that came on this car just don't do it for me. Ive been going back and forth on painting these or replacing them with a more stock setup.

I agree. I've run repop 18x10.5 thinspokes in the rear with 315-30-18 Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s, and the factory 18x9.5 thinspoke with the 275-40-18s, and had no issues. Maybe it varies from car to car, idk, but I doubt it....

I’m probably not going to auto cross, more going to take the wife on a bunch of twisty road cruises and maybe an occasional track day.

I used a square setup of '96 Grand Sport wheels that were 17" all around and it gave me AH issues. Turning AH off solved the problem, but it was a constant issue.

I'm definitely staying with the original staggered setup, have a line on a set of OE wheels I intend to pick up later this month. After I get those installed the 18", and 19" wheels that are on there now will be up for sale.
