i love my vette but there are those times every once in a while when i wish i had bought a m6 rather than an a4. yesterday, i took my car out against my friends APR tuned audi s4 running pretty rich boost. the car is nice, but you cant beat the v8 rumble and the exotic appeal of the c5. we were making a few spirited runs around some backroads and these are the times i wish i had the m6. the problem is that even with the car in 3rd, it doesnt shift as crisp, hard, and on time as i wish it had. off the line (besides the wheel spin) is fine. but as we approach around 50mph and my friend upshifts his car to the next best gear, i find myself "waiting" for the car to shift. the response feels sloppy at best. you guys know what i'm talking about? that instant where you hit WOT and yeah, you hear the 5.7L v8 rev up and roar like a monster, but the car is still stuck in its present gear waiting. only after a second does the gear shift and all that roar is transferred with meaning....to the rear tires.
what is my best option. i know this is good for the car, but my only solution sometimes is to start the car off in 2nd, then upshift to 3rd when the rpms get high enough. this doesnt help either, as the accel in 2nd is good, but the shift from 2nd to 3rd is sloppy again.
i need good hard hitting, timely upshifts and the correct gear selection when the occasion calls for it. the car is mostly a daily driver but short of having trading the a4 vert for a m6, i need some advice. programming? shiftkit? i dont plan to change my 3.15 gears. all help will be appreciated. i dont want to lose to an audi. :D
Your problem is easily soved..Install a Transgo shift kit !! The best bang for the buck A4 mod out there....PERIOD!! :yesnod: There is no PCM program that will duplicate the crisp, sure and lightning quick shifts that the transgo will produce. The kit is about $109.00 and the install should be about $180-$200.00 for an experienced transmission tech. You will LOVE it!!:D In fact most M6's I race with have been hard pressed to shift as quick as my A4.
Check out my home pages for my videos and document pics on the install.:yesnod:
i'm with you bro
i have posted threads similar to this and have not recieved very good advise. you should be fine when launching from a stop. if you are racing from a roll you are screwed. in this case i prefer to keep the car in the lower gear that i want to launch from.
re the transgo kit. there seems to be controversy. some shops say not to use it. also i guess the aftermarket torque converter companies dont suggest it. but it seems that everyone who has it loves it
I agree with Al get your computer reprogramed.
Before you spend $300.00 on buying and installing a shift kit, checkout the Yank Converters web site under F.A.Q.s. Yank does not recommend using shift kits.
now the next question: which PCM programming? something that will offer reliability and proven results. prob will never track the car since i have a vert and no plans for a roll cage, so most important are performance, ability for a wide range of tuning, and most important..practicality. only proflow intake now, but considering heads/cam for the future and/or headers/exhaust.
I'm still of the opinion that LS1-Edit doesn't have a serious competitor yet. If you really want broad control over your tuning it's your best option. Many folks are concerned about the complexity that comes with this control. In actuality, tranny tuning is not a bad place to start getting comfortable with it. If you're a tinkerer, this is a good option. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, there are plenty of tuners out there who could do this for you. In general I would stay away from mail order tuning if you're looking for a truely custom tune... Nothing worse that a PCM gone postal. :reddevil
