Default ABS Module Failure

Hi Everyone. Brand new member. I have a 98 C5 Convertible. I have the ABS/Traction Control light issue. Took it to a local mechanic and they are telling me I need a new ABS module and apparently a steering position sensor. Main thing I'm trying to figure out is the ABS module.

Here's what I have learned so far (which I'm sure is well known but new to me)

1 - They do not make the model anymore. I've looked everywhere and all I see are used units.
2 - There is conflicting information as to whether or not these can be refurbished. Seems the later model C5's can be refurbished but not sure if that applies to 98's. Have seen a couple videos where people are pulling these, cracking them open, soldering a few connections and the fault code goes away. Again, not sure if these are 98's or newer. In one post I saw that these specifically can not (or companies will not) be repaired.

Ran the codes in the car and it says the TCS is not communicating with the car.

So, my questions are:

1 - Can this be refurbished?
2 - Where would I find a (known good) replacement part.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

No. The 2000 and earlier have an encapsulant covering the electronics. So far no one has been able to successfully remove it while leaving the module intact.
It IS possible to convert to the 2001 and newer system. See the 4th sticky in the C5 tech category: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...m-success.html

Thanks very much for this. Read through that entire post. Might be above my capability. I'm in the Florida Panhandle if someone is near and can do this swap.
