2004 Corvette, 76k miles, stock. Slow speed turns as in a parking lot or driveway and I hear what sounds like a metal on metal grind. I can't feel it in the steering or in the car itself but it is a noticeable sound. Driving me nuts. Have had the differential fluid changed to rule out the wrong fluid and differential checks out. A brake job that has about 2500 miles on it but the noise was heard sooner than that. Sound seems to occur after the car has warmed up. Can this be associated with the exhaust system. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Have had the car for about 2 months and bought from a corvette shop in the Dallas Tx. area that has had a reputable background.
Have you been able to determine approximate location of the noise?
You mentioned changing out the diff fluid... one thing to keep in mind is that diff fluids are all different. For example, after rebuilding the LSD in my Z06, I filled it up with Mobil 1 LS. After a short time the diff was making noise in tight turns, and got annoying fast. I was warned about this potential situation by another member. Then I drained the Mobil 1 LS and refilled with AC Delco fluid. No more noise after that!
Have been out of pocket but thank you for your reply. The noise seems to be variable if this makes sense. It may come from one of the rear corners or from usually right front. Differential drained and replaced with ACD Gear Oil GL-5 75W90. The noise in the differential gone almost immediately. That is when this other noise was noticed. Also annoying. The one fact that does not change. The noise only occurs after the car has been driven for a few minutes. After it has warmed up. With the lower speed grinding sounds appearing to move (for lack of a better descriptor), and with it being after the car has warmed up or driven a short amount of time, could this be associated with the exhaust system?
Have no records of the steering pump being rebuilt. My experiences with sounds from the steering system has always been the low fluid drag that you can hear and feel. That's not this sound and there is no feeling like that in the steering wheel. The fluid is full.
