How important is it to change the enclosed small round gasket the filter plugs into when changing the automatic transmission filter? It looks like a special tool is needed to change this gasket, is there an easy way to do this without a special tool?
I pounded a small screwdriver in between the case and seal and after I bent the seal in was able to yoink it out simply with pliers. Try to not scratch up the case too much but it wasn't difficult at all once I realized what needed to be done... forget slipping it out with a pick lol. My screwdriver and transmission survived the ordeal without issues.
In five filter and fluid changes I have never changed that seal.
So long as the filter suction nozzle fits tightly and there is no damage to the seal, the seal should be fine. There is a risk of scratching the seal bore if the seal is improperly removed.

In my case (see above), I damaged the seal thinking it would come out easy... needed to replace after that.

That was a pain to get out. I remember trying to make a tool with a washer on top on a threaded long bolt and tried to slap hammer (like a dent puller) that out, no go and eventually did what Elektro did.
Being very careful to not score the wall.
I know if I change that fluid again, I wont remove it,
Here's a home made tool to remove the seal. I added a 1 inch piece of pipe over the 1/2 inch and made my own seal slide hammer. Cost me about 5 bucks from home depot.
I'm not sure why anyone would need to replace this seal. I'm around 137,000 miles on mine, and several fluid & filter changes. I agree with Jim993. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
