Are dealer required to have a mechanic certified to work on vettes? My local dealership sells the car but when you take it in, their line is..."We dont have any mechanics certified to work on corvettes" Funny...but they don't inform you of that at time of purchase!!!!!!
A dealer told me 2 years ago that they could not carry Corvettes because they would be required to have (purchase) all the special tools required for servicing them and they had to have a mechanic specificly trained to work on them. It sounded reasonable.
My son is a tech at a Chevy dealership, so I asked him. He says there's no such thing as a Certified Corvette tech. BUT, there are special tools for some tasks, and special training on some Corvette systems. Usually, if they sell enough Corvettes to make it worhwhile, dealers will have one or two techs who will specialize on Corvettes, but most dealers don't sell that many.
Fortunately, where my son works there's a tech who has been there for over 20 years, loves Corvettes, and is really sharp. Guess where mine goes for work ... :yesnod: :D
i aksed a family member in the dealership field about this....thier reply
GM requires a fee to carry the corvette each year, within this fee your techs get training, and your dealership gets tools for that "trained" tech to use...the fee from what i understand is fairly expensive, and GM requires you to move so may vettes per year to keep the right......odd, but ide think normal business pratice
The ZR1 had a Certification for Techs and so does the Viper. My past roommate is a certified Viper Tech, and Dodge Dealers must have a certified Viper Tech to sell Vipers. GM :mad The C5 should have a certified school IMHO.
There is a $4K tool kit that is supposed to be purchased and the dealer has to have mechanic trained to work on the Vette. My dealer did not purchase the tool kit since they only sell one or two cars a year. They did have their top tech trained and in most cases they can do any work required on the car because their regular tools are sufficient. However, when it comes to major tasks like rebuilding the diff they had to send me to another dealer because that dealer had the special took kit. GM had approved repair of the diff but little did anybody know that when that dealer got the diff removed from the car another special tool kit was required to disassemble the diff. At the time this kit cost another $1k but would not be available for 6 months. So it turned out they had to replace the diff Vs repair it. Which my dealer probably could have done with his normal tools.

That's the difference between a regular Chevrolet dealer and a Corvette dealer. All Corvette dealers are Chevrolet dealers but only relative few Chevrolet dealers are Corvette dealers. You can usually recognize a Corvette dealer by the fact they have a bunch of new Corvettes in stock most all of the time. Ordinary dealers get a new Corvette to sell when they meet certain other sales goals and since they don't get them all the time they usually are in no hurry to move it as they bring in floor traffic.

Go ahead, rub it in. :D
I'm sooooo jealous, I bet every Vette owner on the CF wishes he had a son who was a tech at a Vette dealership.
No such thing :nonod: Its called "OTJ" on the job training...And one can make ALOT more money working on Caviliers and GEO'S at the dealership level as apossed to specializing on Corvettes...Thats sort of where the break down in Corvette service at the dealer begins :smash:
If you are fortunate you may find someone who sacrifices making the "big dollars" for doing something that they take pride in and enjoy...But they are few and far between ;)

:iagree: It is great to have guys like C-5 TECH and c4c5 specialist. When they are done with their day job they are both posting here to help us out on the forum. Thanks guys. :hurray:
I couldn't agree more. It is awesome to have c4c5 and c5-tech posting here.
The few dealers in my area have admitted whether they have a corvette specialist or not. One freely admitted that they didn't and this was obvious. This is a dealer that gets one vette every once in a while and when they do, they put up words on their lighted sign saying "new corvette in showroom". It doesn't last long. The ones that have multiple ones at all times seem to have a corvette specialist or a guy who "only works on vettes". If he's not doing vettes, he's got a Z28 or camaro to work on possibly.

Yeah, well, I believe most of you are equipped to produce your own. And the process IS kind of fun; it just takes a while. So get to work!
