Default Changing Tire Sensors

I have to change the tire pressure sensors on a set of 2003 wheels with runflats. If I deflate the tires and let the sensor fall into the tire and break the beads, does anyone know if the tires will "give" enough to allow the sensors to be changed without actually dismounting the tires?

Hopefully somebody will chime in.... I'm getting ready to swap out some sensors myself, and would like to know the best route. Also should each sensor stay in the same location??? ex. RR RF etc.. :withstupid:

don't let them fall into the tire (they will be hard to get out), have the tire guy compress the tire to break the bead and you can hold the sidewall down to pull them out. I just put them on my Z06 and we never moved the tire on the rim, just compressed it in that one spot....it was a breeze!

Quinn,
Did he compress the tire where the valve stem is? Or is that to close and a chance on breaking the sensor? And did you go to a dealership or a shop that sells high end wheels???

I went to discount tire. We pushed the tire down at the point where the valve stem is, took the stem out, and put the sensors in. The tire sidewall rim clears the sensors, so it was no big deal. Of course, the F1 Supercar tires don't have as stiff a side wall as the runflats, but I still think you should be able to do it no problem.

Has anyone with runflats actually tried this?

I would venture a guess that your Z06 has SC tires and not Run-Flats. The side wall of the Run-Flat is night and day different than the SC Tire.... very stiff vs. fairly stiff at best.

Have them remove the tire, but not completely. Break the bead and 'walk' the mechine a tad to compress the tire with a prybar again the inside lip of the rim... being careful not to hit the sensor. Then unscrew the sensor and swap it out for the new one. Them remove the prybar slowly and air up the tire.... Balance and mount it back on the car... go through the relearn procedure with the DIC and a big ole magnet... DONE!

Yes, I know, that's what I said above. I had a coupe and am familiar with the runflats also...

i just recently switched out my runflats on 02 wheels with bfg kds on z06 repros. i had the tire guy just break the bead and compress the tire right by the valve stem just enough to stick his hand in and grab the sensor when he unbolted it.i then had him put a nomal non-sensor stem on the 02 rim and re-inflate the runflat. i then made sure the same sensor was installed on the same respective zo6 rim. no need to relearn the sensors.the only time you need to relearn is if you do not match the sensors to the new wheels. hope this helps Red.

Great info, guys! Many thanks!

I've a set of custom Z06 wheels to deal with when the work is complete (rim polishing, cente painting, center cap to competely cover bolts, etc.) and I'd wondered the same thing in case my set of used sensors I bought have a problem. But, it sounds like I might as well simply pull the ones from my stock wheels and resell the other sensors! Great. :yesnod:

Red,
Finally changed out my sensors today. Here's what was recomened and what we actually did. Since I had the larger '99 sensors, we put the wheel on the machine upside down, broke both beads, then removed the back side of the tire from the rim. Then the tire was only half on and was easy to remove and replace the sensors then remount the back side of the tire. The local Goodyear couldn't guarentee against wheel lip damage on the chrome,
so I ended up at a large volume wheel dealer who sells up to 24" rims. Did me right.... GOOD LUCK

I remember previous posts saying the F1 SC tires that are original equipment on the Z06 have steel mesh sidewalls that prevent the signal from the pressure sensors from getting out, thereby rendering them useless in this tire. Anyone with direct experienc on this?
