Default interior hvac temp sensor 97 base

was installing a hyper flash last week and ran into a crap repair on the hvac plastic grill. also the hvac sensor plastic went to hell so i bought a replacement off the bay. also got a new plastic grill. when replacing the under steering wheel panel i could only get 3 of the 4 screws to line up. the one for the hvac sensor was off. several hours of replacing and checking alignment of everything that last screw would not line up. the other screws (3 of the 4) lined up perfect. i ended up bumping the plastic with my dremel. while the replacement sensor was being shipped i just pushed the broken sensor in as well as i could and buttoned everything up and started the car up and turned the air on to see if it still worked and it did. i noticed the sensor end slides into a housing in the dash and it looks like it could be a crap shoot if it lines up right. i'm going to replace the new sensor this summer and i'm going to try to find a way to make sure the sensor end goes in where it's supposed to go. maybe a short extension to the sensor end. was reading somewhere you should make sure the sensor lines up to the under dash housing right. anybody have a slight problem as this one? thanks

I’ve had my dash apart several times but am having trouble visualizing the situation you’ve described. I will just note that from reading on the forum and other sites that exactly how the interior temperature sensor functions is less than clear.

thanks for the reply redzg. less than clear is an understatement. they were only equipped with the dual zone air system. this all started with the simple install of the hyper flash, which was pretty easy. remove the trunk compartment cover with screw driver, very easy. that small hvac grill cover was supposed to pop right off to. mine did not pop right off. it was a fight just to get it to pop off. when it finally came off it was full of epoxy and some kind of grey sealant. looked like the plastic tabs broke off and rather getting a new one the po just gooped it up with epoxy and sealant stuff. this is an under 10 dollar fix (thats what the new grill cost). it's funny how the screw hole does not line up in that spot only. the other 3 screws lined up perfect. it looked like the panel should shift to the left a little but that would make the other 3 off a little. i just took my dremel and elongated the panel hole about an 1/8 inch and reassembled everything back. 25 year plastic comes apart very easy and thats what happened to the sensor. got a replacement off e-bay. if you look at that sensor installed in the panel and then install the panel you really can't see the sensor engage into the tube under the dash. you have to assume it went right.it's kind of a blind shot with hope it goes in right. with my hvac sensor dash screw hole off a little it made me wonder if the sensor seated right. it's just hanging in there right now and i'll start this repair and replace this summer. sorry for the long rant but it's hard to explain without pics which i'm having problems with on my chromebook.
