Just got an e-mail today from M/T concerning the ET STREET tires that are due to surface. It's not much, but I'll give you what I got.

As I gave the drag racing a break last Summer..please refresh my memory. ET streets are a bias drag tire?? Will these need to be run with a skinny in the front???? Can You drive these on the street???? Thanks :)

someone explain the scoop between DRs and ET Streets please :)
Yes, my BFG drag radials now have the cords showing!

Al, how far past the tread (the last center one that shows the longest) before you hit cord? I bought 315 Nittos and they don't hook as good as the 275 BFG's!
I'm a little concerned with the side wall issue on a 17" wheel but, I remember when MT was running at Bonnievile for the land speed record. I think we can trust them to put out a good product. I'm going to hold out and give them a try.
Somebody raised the issue of radials and bias ply tires. Now I know I'm really dating myself but, I remember when radials first came out. In those days it was not recommended to mix on the same axiel but, mixing front to rear was ok. Has that changed? What's the problem with running bias rear and radials front?

I really can't say, it was about 30-35 passes ago accompanied by a good burnout!
someone explain the scoop between DRs and ET Streets please :)I'm interested in this as well. :)
The ET is very close to a pure drag slick with very soft sidewalls, the DR is a radial for street/strip. The ET is DOT legal to drive on the street where as a slick is not.
ET streets are pretty much regular bias ply soft sidewall slicks with two grooves cut in them. They get away with them being DOT approved by calling them light truck tires. Absolutely useless in the rain but a great tire at the track. I like them because they take less of a burnout and eliminate a lot of wheel hop in my experience with them, plus they last a long time.
I have used them with radials in the front, skinny radials in the front and skinny bias ply tires in the front at the track and its just fine. I never had any problems with ET streets with regular size radial front tires on the street either. Skinny front radials and ET streets were pretty bad though..
I hope they really do it this time, if memory serves me I think they did make 17" ET street or drags a few years ago..

Re: 17" ET STREET REPORT (scool93535)
The et streets ROCK on both the track and the street (for high HP applications). I drove them once with the radials on front and feeling that unsafe swaying back and forth was enough for me to immediately order the skinnines. Have heard a few horror stories about guys kissing the wall on the top end of the track with bias ply street slicks (et streets) and radials on front.
With the skinnines on the set up is 100% stable. So stable in fact, that i drove them on the street and highway for 5 months last year and put about 2500 miles without any problems at all. Just have to watch the weather closely b/c they are scary slippery in the rain. I drove them to the track 65 miles each way several times, drag raced and drove them home. The problem with running a bias ply tire in the rear and radials in front, is that the two different tire materials fight against one another and make the car sway back and forth and feel very unstable as you start reaching speeds in excess of 60 and of course when your doing 120 in can get quit interesting (so i have heard). I experienced it one time on the street and that was all it took for me to bite the bullet and by the ccw front drag rims with bias ply skinnines. Many guys run the radials on front with et streets and they say it is no big deal once you get use to it, but the extra grand (1,000) for piece of mind, safety and confidence going down the 1/4 mile, was a no brainer for me. Especially when i was running 11.6s on motor in a vert with 0 safety equipment installed on the car at the time.
For my new 427 Stroker coming home in about one month, i will be using the et streets on the street (hence the name) on a almost fulltime basis as there is no way i could come close to hooking otherwise. The skinnines on the road and highways also handle much better than most expect. Instead of taking highway curved exit ramps at 70, you just have to keep the speed to around 40/45 mph!
