am in the process of building a 422 iron block stroker for my 99 speed. am going fairly aggressive with hyd. cam specs of around 244 range, ls6 maxed out.etc. have just received a ghl exhauset, but wonder, is the 2 1/2 inch piping really enough? i hear twin turbos, etc running this, but would a 3" sucj as a stainless works be better or is there really any gain. your input appreciated. thanks, joe.
Most headers have a 3" collecter end and then you can swage down to 2-1/2" or stay 3". I installed Flowmasters on my 1989 C4 with L98 engine and ran a custom 3" exhaust all the way back from the Hooker headers to the Flowmasters. Car pulled great and the low end torque was phenominal. Of course, an added benefit with the Flowmasters was resonance - I could set off any car alarm just by tapping the gas pedal as I went by the car. Lots of fun.
Cost me $900 for the 3" exhaust but the install was acclaimed by many in my vette club as one of the best they had ever seen. I only autocross and occaisionally drag strip for fun.
With the 422 engine, I'd definitely go the 3" route - more cube = more air/fuel in, which requires more air/fuel out to avoid HP loss.
