Default Service Column Lock

Hey, first post on this forum!

Car is a 2000 M6 Coupe

I've had a low battery for a couple weeks now, with car off ~11.5-11.8v (car charged fine when running) for the last couple weeks now waiting to make the trip to Sam's for a replacement. Yesterday I received the "Service Column Lock" on the dash as well as the dreaded fuel cut at ~2mph. I did read and see people were having this issue with a low battery so I hooked up a charger and let it charge over night and when I went to start the car with now 12.7v I've been getting the same message.

I tried disconnecting the battery and keeping the leads together for ~30 minutes.
Went through and saw no codes

I just purchased the LMC5 and I'm getting a new battery today, which I doubt is the issue at this point. I was wondering if there were any other things to look through prior in order to get the car operable since shipping will be over a week. I can tune out the fuel cut but my HP Tuner is a 5 hour drive away. I did notice some water on the carpeting on the passenger side so I did clean out the "gutters" which housed a family of rats at one time. Would pulling the relay above the BCM (there are 3 and from other posts it looks like the one on the far right is the column lock) or should I just replace the relay? The wiring down there looks like a rats nest compared to others I've seen online.

I bought the car used and from the paperwork the car has been in the shop at least 3 times for this issue and it does say a harness was installed.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Can't really be down a car at the moment.

I would pull the BCM and inspect the circuit board for signs of water intrusion.

Just pulled it and while I was down there checked every fuse, it doesn't look like water ever got in there.

Welcome to the forum. Browse the tech section for this issue, there are a bazillion threads on the dreaded Column Lock. Even though it is nice to have the PO records...all of that stuff the dealer did is essentially useless. The bottom line is that you have to install the LMC5 and do the Brown Wire Mod (someone correct me if I am wrong here). In the mean time, you might try disconnecting the battery overnight, charging it and trying again. Good Luck and let us know.

uno momento
#1 install the lmc5, when you do you will disconnect power from the battery
you will also unplug and remove the BCM
you got the colum lock message but did your column lock up on you? if it did you will need the unlocker from the same place that the lmc5 came from.
The column lock relay is removed during the lmc5 install

The column did not lock up. I believe, going by the paperwork that came with the car, the lock mechanism was removed. I do have the LMC5 on the way, looks to be about a week out. I was hoping to "fix" the problem for now and then use the LMC5 to cover any problems down the road. The more I read up on this topic though the less I can see a fix without the LMC5. Not calling it a "band-aid" fix but would like to figure out what sparked this problem.

This is the second time I've received this error, the first time was about a year ago and it was cleared with a charge.
