I have a 2002 C5 and I have been looking at some of the head and cam kits (LS1) offered through various vendors. I was hoping I could get some experienced advice prior to my purchasing. Has anyone already bought one of those package deals, if so, how was it? Do I need to purchase anything else to install? How was this install?
Any help on this would be appreciated.
Heads and Cam packages usually come with a complete set of ported cylinder heads, a custom grind camshaft and pushrods. You will need a pair of head gaskets and a set of head bolts for the installation. Installtion is not that difficult for someone that has removed and replaced heads and camshafts in the past but I would never recommend a first timer doing it.
The next thing you will had to address is PCM tuning, which is a must to exctract the maximum amount of power and drivability from ported heads/cam packages. This should definitely be done by someone that knows what they are doing and has access to a chassis dyno with a wide band 02 sensor.
There are many different stages and options for heads/cam packages and it all comes down to a few different questions: What are you going to use the car for? Does it have to pass emissions? Is daily and street drivability a priority to you?
Another thing to consider is you will need a set of long tube headers to get the best power gains from a heads/cam package because the stock exhaust manifolds would definitely then be the bottleneck of airflow through your engine. Also, if your car is an automatic, you will need a torque converter.
If you have any questions you want answered, or want any information on what head/cam package options Agostino Racing (ARE) has to offer, please feel free to drop me an email.
I highly reccomend going to a tuner within reasonable driving distance so they can tune the package in-house,I strongly recommend Cartek in NJ,they have consisitently put out the most powerful heads and cam packages, and there dyno numbers are backed up at the track,Cartek cars dominate the fastest C5 heads and cam list, plus there packages pass emissions and have stock-like drivability.Call them at 908-317-4496.You won't be dissapointed.
To all who have provided me advice (spelled right), thank you. I am just begining this endevor and am looking at all of my options. My ride is limited to sunny days and any vette event in my area. I am looking for more HP at the touch of the pedal (right when I am passing or messing around on the streets), and I have been told that a supercharger presents delays in throttle response. It was recommended to me that I check out the H/C packages. So here I am.
Because I am "married with childeren", I will need to do this in a phased approach (to keep it below the radar). Should I change my exhaust before I do anything else (to accomodate the increase in air flow), or do I buy the expensive parts first. I guess that has been the question that has stumped men for as long as hot rods have been around.....
