When I turn on the AC the light flashes then goes out. I evacuated the system prior to recharge but then it took hardly any R134 and the compressor never cycled. I jumped the compressor and it ran a bit but shut off without pulling any more R134. Thanks in advance for your help, Gary

Lets see if we can get a little more information.
1. when was your a/c system working normally and have you done any work on your car since then?
2. It is unusual to have to jump the compressor to pull in charge. How long did you hold vacuum before charging and did the system hold vacuum without decay over that time?
3. What static pressure do you have in the system now and at what ambient temperature?

There are a number of recent threads where members are having issues with the system pressure sensor reading. C5Diag has guided them through diagnostics of the sensor, it’s wiring connector, and the wiring to the connector. Do you have a way to see what pressure the sensor rrading?

If you had to recharge the system you obviously have a leak...when you pulled a vacuum before recharging did it hold a vacuum ??…if you have a voltmeter and a 12 volt test light we can look at the rest of the electrical !!...what year is the car ??...good idea to put as much info in your online profile...your system should take 24 ounces I believe so if you're using those 12oz cans that 2 if my math is correct....if you jumped the relay at pins 87 and 30 (load side) the compressor clutch should remain engaged but you said it 'shut off" ???...if the clutch did not stay engaged you'd have to look at the power feed and ground to the load side of the relay.

Thank you, car is a '98 and new to me, I was trying to get it going so I could put some dye in it. You are correct, when I jumped the compressor I let it run for a bit then disconnected the jumper and it ran a bit before stopping. Couldn't understand why it wasn't pulling the R134. I do have a voltmeter and test light. Sorry but looks like I will be gone the rest of today but will be back tomorrow. If you have something for me to start on with the diagnostics it would be greatly appreciated and will get back when I have the results.

I wouldn’t waste your money using more Freon with dye…if you have an air compressor you can pump around 150 psi of air (I use Nitrogen which I also use for EVAP systems) into the system and get some soapy water and start spraying around looking for a leak…using a Halogen leak detector works too if you have one…I’ll use either the leak detector or the ultrasonic “ears” especially if it may be the evaporator core…watch the video…if jumping the load side engages the relay the coil side would need to be checked after confirming after the system is properly serviced.
