Default Which Thermostat?

I will be doing a coolant flush on my newly-purchased 03Z. I understand that there was a production change where the later LS6s use a thermostat integral with the pump-inlet housing [o-ring seal] while the earlier cars use a separable thermostat and a different gasket.

The factory service info suggests that I have the integral variety and looking up the part via the VIN shows GM part 12571261 for the t'stat/housing assembly and 12561155 for the housing 0-ring.

My car is 10-02 production. As far as I know the coolant pump is original.

Are these the correct parts?

Buy both and return the one you don't need.

You have it backwards! The early style is all one unit, i.e., the t-stat is integral with the inlet housing. T-stats were $50+ due to buying more than just the stat. Later ones were a separate stat, like they'd used in most all cars for at least 50 years. They are much cheaper. I believe the later stat is GM #12600172, which is a 195° stat (I think!), but please double check my info. You may want to go with a 180° stat. If so, the above part# wont be a 180° stat.....

Thank you, Grinder.

Do you think the later, separable thermostat, version uses the o-ring seal for the housing? I am removing the t'stat to do a good flush.

Does a 180F thermostat set "Cooling System Performance" trouble codes [Typically a P2181]?

I installed a 180 in mine & have had no codes.

As for the O-ring, yes, I haven't seen an LS1/LS6 housing that didn't use an O-ring. A 180 stat will cause no codes......

The two style thermostats are NOT interchangeable without changing the water pump also. Different hole diameter in the water pump for each style.
