04 A4 shifter cable not shifting
Hello fellas , need some help from the collective.
The A4 shifter cable gave up the ghost today at work and had to have the car towed home. The shifter moves easily through all the notches and other then not connecting to the transmission The functioning of the shifter feels good.
The car is stuck in reverse now.
tonight I jacked the car up and poked at the transmission shifter cable bushing end at the back of the car with a long screw driver and that seems intact and firmly connected to the shift arm. i dont think its a bushing problem at that end.
how do I trouble shoot whether its a broken bushing up front or a broken cable?
when I go through the gears on the shifter I feel no resistance or binding and I don't hear anything.
I have read the previous threads on the shifter cable and it looks like I can replace the bushing from the top side , I can go at it either from the top or the bottom but I want to do only the amount of work required. is there a way for me to trouble shoot further to determine if its the front bushing or a broken cable?
A bad bushing at the transmission end is the most common failure and the plastic adjuster needs to be secure. Try selecting Park and Low then look to see if the transmission cable moves at the transmission for both and the arm on the transmission moves with it. if the cable doesn't move at that end then the shifter end of the cable might have popped off the bottom of the shifter or the cable is bad. To check that, the console needs to be removed and the four shifter mounting nuts too, use caution lifting the shifter too much because the plastic cable outer covering doesn't bend much and can break. Stop lifting when you feel slight resistance. Use a light to see if the cable end is attached to the small shifter ball and moves with it when shifting to the Park and Low extremes. If the cable end isn't connected to the shifter ball try pushing it back on with a long screwdriver.

thanks, from my inspection last night the transmission end is securely attached to the shift arm, i poked at it with a long screw drive and tried to see if it was loose on the then stud . it held firm and had no wiggle in it.
i think i will start with getting at it from the top and see if its the plastic adjuster on the trans cable at the shifter lever. thanks bob

thanks, i found the dorman 14055 two piece set, i think its the same bushing but only a package of two
i never did get the inter locking cable off
i used an orange Pick from HF and pried out all the old pieces from the cable end , lubed up the new bushing and squeezed it in with some long 11" needle nose pliers . i canted it in the opening and squeezed it in.
then i used the long HF body panel removing tool as a fulcrum and pressed it in place
now time for the test drive
everything works!!!!!
