Hi. I recently bought a '98 C5. I cant get the horn to honk. Is there anything I can check or do myself to get this fixed? I'm trying to avoid taking it to a dealer :nono:
Try reseating relay # 36
12 v comes directly from the batt. to the relay, thru the fuse to the horn.
Dark Green wire is the hot side, black is the ground.
Check to see if the relay (located in engine compartment under the fuse cover by the battery) is clicking when you honk the horn. If the relay is clicking, then the horns (1 high note horn & 1 low note horn) probably need replacement.
I reseated relay #36 and it didnt help. I also listened for a clicking sound when honking the horn, but didnt hear anything. I havent had a chance to rewire the horn (if I can figure that out   ). Anybody have any other suggestions, or know where the horn is hidden on these things? Thanks so much for all the help so far! :chevy
The horns are located in the front bumper under the right front light. You can access the horns from the bottom of the car after removing the access panel under the car (easier with car up on a lift).
Before going after the horns, you should double check the fuse, relay (you can swap out for another one located in the relay/fuse center in the engine compartment. Lastly you may have a bad horn button at the steering wheel and you could try turning the horns on with the key fob (press the panic button) once to turn horns on and again to turn off. If no sound, then listen for clicking at the relay when turning the horns on with panic button on the key fob. If you have clicking but no sound then your horns are probably bad. I would not replace the horns unless you get clicking at the relay.
If the above diagnosis does not work, it would be helpful to test with a multimeter the voltages at the relay, then at the horns.
