Reverse Lockout Solenoid
I had posted some time ago that on the 4 to 5 shift of the M6 with a warm transmission, I would occasionally go through into the reverse gate, which this solenoid is supposed to prevent (It is supposed to lock you out of the reverse gate as soon as you exceed 3 mph after startup). I never did any damage, since I heard a light gear clash before I forced it, but it really bugged me to have to worry about going for fifth gear. Anyhow, as c4c5specialist suggested, I got the dealer to check it with the Tech 2, and the shift into reverse was blocked, as it should be. However, this was an intermittent thing, and the solenoid can be replaced without dropping the tranny, so I just went ahead and got one from Fitchner and replaced it anyhow. I waited a while before posting this to see how it worked out, and I have not had a recurrence. So perhaps this solenoid can malfunction intermittently. I do know that if it is flat out bad, you will set a code, and I never had that, but my experience would seem to suggest that it is possible for this solenoid to fail to work intermittently without setting a code.

My lockout intermittently fails as well, and I seem to remember other posts in which the solenoid was alleged to periodically fail. It makes you wonder if the solenoid came from the same parts bin as the column lock. Anyhoo, since I'm still under warranty I will be having my dealer replace mine if spring ever arrives up here (it's 10 degrees today with 2+ feet of snow on the ground).
