Looking at doing an electric PS conversion and completely ditching the hydraulic PS pump and Magnasteer parts on the rack as some have on C3's
FWIW I have gone down the entire Turn One Co. rabbit hole and it's not up to the response that I want
Thanks
Go to my Oklahoma Z thread and search. I went down the rabbit hole last yearand had given it serious consideration. The TRW pump seems to be preferred for more psi. The fomoco/volvo pumps are also popular. There is a company in Poland which I listed with links which puts out two options for pump rpm / psi control based either on a rheostat selection or a gps speed sensor and calibration to your preference. I had also found an ebay page selling rebuilt TRWs with better rings and that would have been the route for me. Easy to stash them in the driver fenderwell. Though theu vibrate and make noise so be sure to mountthem solidly as well as with any kind of heavu rubber damper you can devise.
I, too, have suffered by Turn One and I have yet to even use their danged pump. They shipped me one with a far outdated connector type then couldn't diag remotely and had me soend another hundred on adapters before I got PO'd and sent them a pic of what they had shipped me, to which they firmly swore they had not used such a fitting in twenty years and "surely" I must have bought some knock-off fake Turn One product. Yeah, I have a screen shot of my invoice from them and could ID their family college aged employee of theirs who sold me the part in the first place.
Have fun! And I totally want to see build out on this when you do it.
I am very impressed with your work and your dedication to your project
Albeit though; My direction was not to use any hydraulic system at all.
My goal is purely a rack and pinion system stripped of the Magnasteer aided by an electric motor to control the power https://www.zip-corvette.com/68-82-e...onversion.html
Oh! That is quite excellent. Akin to the C7 steering racks then, but without the insane price tag. I had considered the C7 route and went to that page to ask about it and did not receive sufficient comfort in understanding to take the leap. It is heavily computer controlled and no one could really point to the data inputs required. In my head? I suspect it can be run at a static power level or influenced similar to the rheostat and gps links above, but no one has yet figured that out and I didn't feel like trail blazing.
Not electric, but if your motivation is partly based on moving away from C5 rack rebuild issues and you're not afraid of some light fab work then there is Sweet Manufacturing.
My mind and Google searching have wandered a bit on this... perhaps it could be feasible to chop up the C5 steering column and retrofit in an EPS style assist like that offered by ePowerSteering. Maybe even tie in the stock magnasteer wires/signal to adjust the assist level as the magnasteer system does. Not really sure what to do about the factory steering rack in this arrangement, though. Maybe loop the fluid lines, weld the torsion bar?

I like the idea. Looking to lose some numbness and a little more control and the Magnasteer is not helping
No, the C3 setup is the easiest to convert but the more I dig into hard parts and app, a Porsche 911 system might be a better choice IF it can be converted to a C5 rack.
Who knows? A complete electric setup might feel tighter and more accurate with a different, matching rack to compliment the EPS (electric power steering )
The trick is to divorce the system from original application and adapt it to a C5.
I'm still researching the best solution for right now and there's a lot of incomplete possibilities.
