Hello,
I know this is not the place for C 5 info but a quick one. My friends 2004 C5 belts squeal when he first starts it but shorty after the squeal goes away .
Thank you in advance.

I just went thru this exact problem with mine. Most likely it is one of the 4 idler pulley bearings. Two plain idlers and 2 idlers mounted on belt tensioners. It could also be the belts or antifreeze on belts.
I replaced both belts, 2 idlers and one tensioner for about $150 and an hour of my time. To be fair, I might have gotten by with only replacing the A/C belt and idler.

The simplest first step is to clean the pulleys and try the Gatorback belt. I did that, along with a tensioner and idler pulley change, 4 years ago and my chirp/squeal has not returned. I do recall it took some searching to find the Gatorback belt because the name or manufacturing had been sold off. From what I can tell from my records, I used the Continental 4060798 belt.
