Headlights won’t go down
Bulbs can be shutoff with the switch, but both headlights are stuck in the up position.
- bulbs are stock halogen
- all lights work. Low beams/High beams, turn signals, brake, DRL, interior etc.
- motors do not make a grinding noise but the driver side will “click” once and move approx. 1/8” when the switch is turned to off.
-The headlights rise with no issue, or noises via switch.
- headlights can be lowered/raised manually
- headlights and brackets are currently taken off the vehicle with no obvious visual issues and the rotating arm assembly appear to be in line with the bump stops.
- ground connections along front frame rails have been cleaned.
I have tried the basic fixes from what I found online:
Checked both fuse boxes. Attempted to flash high beams and turn off the switch. Start the car and toggle the switch.
Since both headlights are stuck in the up position and the lights work. This seems like an obvious electrical issue vs. mechanical. However, electrical diag. Is not my strong suit.
looking for any insight or possible fixes!
thanks.
Has the issue come back since then?
UPDATE:
I opened the housing for the gears in the headlight motor since I was there already and everything looks fine. Grease is still in gears and drive.
i ordered a brass gear kit as preventative maintenance, but this doesn’t look like it’s the issue.
If they go down, you have a bad solder joint inside the box. Can be removed and
resoldered, ro about 150.00 for a new module
as mentioned, electrical diag. is not my strong suit.
however, it doesn’t appear there’s much involved since we’re only talking about the headlight motors.
I decided to do some tests and everything passed with the 5- pin connector.
I could not get +/- 12V on the (A-B/C-D) 4- post terminals of the HCM with the 5-pin connected.
I decided to take off the HCM and have a look. See attached.
theres a corner that was open on the back of the HCM, and moisture has gotten in there over time.
I decided to order a new one anyway given the current state.
does anyone know if these will need to be programmed via scan tool, or are they plug and play ?
again, thanks for the suggestions.
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I have replace the HCM, and upgraded the gears in both motors.
the issue has not returned.
The HCM was purchased from Zip Corvette.
item # HDL-276
upgraded gears were from Amazon - unbranded, but had multiple good reviews.
I’m assuming it was the HCM that was the issue given the items and pictures listed above.
i will update this if anything changes.
Thanks for the help.
