Good day everyone. My 99 with 85K miles on it started to demonstrate some problems with the A4. It is slipping between 1 and 2 when in the D position. It winds a little between the shift then it feels like it catches up with what it is supposed to do then shifts okay. I looked up this symptom and most of the thoughts were that the tranny fluid was most likely low so I followed the process of replenishing the fluid. It took almost 3 quarts! I would think that the DIC would've given me a warning code for the fluid level but nothing. Anyway, I filled her up with the fluid and it does run better but it is still "slipping".
Any ideas of what else it could be like maybe the filter or something else? The refilling the fluid was not that hard but if I need to change the filter then that is what I will do but I need to get her up on quick jack in order to do that. So, any suggestions will be appreciated as we are getting to the rain stages here in Cali, she will be garaged for that period so I am in no rush but I do want to get it fixed properly.
Final question, when shopping for the fluid there was the normal DEX III but also Pennzoil had a DEX IV which stated it is GM approved. I have never heard of Dex IV which is why I am asking. I am leaning towards the DEX III as that is what the manual calls for, but this was 99 and I am positive that many enhancements for fluids have happened in the last 25 years. TIA and cheers!!!

Mobil has a tool on their site. That tool says Synthetic ATF or ATF D/M will work in your transmission. (click on the "filters and other lubricants tab")
I would be surprised if a fluid change fixes the issue you're having.
Happy Thanksgiving To All and especially to my Veteran Brothers and Sisters and most especially to those who didn't make it back whether it be physical or mental.
I was told they don't use bands in modern auto transmissions, but, apparently the 4L60E does have them. Could be a number of things. Maybe a bad servo. I'm not a good person to answer, because I've never had any issues with my 4L60E. Absolutely none. But nothing lasts forever, and mine is almost to 141,000 miles. It owes me nothing. Best of luck, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all......

If/when mine goes down, I'm thinking about purchasing some good quality HD parts from the aftermarket, then have a local guy rebuild it. I know they use better servo's and I think the clutches are a brand called Redline(?). Good name brand bands, too. Heavier duty clutch baskets and a 5 gear planetary are also desirable. I've heard good things about Phoenix and Monster transmissions. Performa Built and RPM, too. I wish you well......

I think you're right but there's nothing modern about a 4L60. The new 6/8/10 speeds are all clutches.
To the OP and anyone else reading, you shouldn't run to a fluid change thinking it'll fix anything. It can resolve minor quirks, like engagement time after moving the shifter, but it will NOT fix slippage. Auto trannies are very unforgiving. 99% of the time once you have slippage, you're in it for a rebuild. If I had to guess, that's where the OP is headed. I had a small leak on an otherwise healthy 700R4 eons ago. Truck gave no warning whatsoever, one day 3/4 were just gone. It was 2 quarts low on fluid. Topping it off did nothing. Yay for dirt driveways.
