So, I'm having an issue with my 2004 C5 that seems to be intermittent and I'm not sure what it could be. Let me explain. I can't seem to drive the car more than 40 miles before it dies and will not start back up. The first time it happened I had to have it towed back to the house. Once it arrived, I was able to start it up and drive it again. (The tow truck driver said that all the vettes he has towed do that and it's the fuel pump going bad). The second occurrence happen after I filled the car up and took a drive (about 40 miles) the next day it would not start and there was a strong gas odor in the shop but no visible leak. Could it be the fuel pump? I'm planning on getting a new fuel pressure gauge this weekend and testing that first. Looking for suggestions on what it could be. Hoping for something other than the fuel pump.
It would also help to connect a test light to the pump input power so if the car dies again you could tell if the pump was getting electrical power, just place the light where you can see it while driving.
Verifying that you have fuel pressure is the right thing to do, after that you have to verify fuel injectors pulses and Ignition coils are firing. Not uncommon is a strong smell of gas after a fill up, I only fill my 97 to 3/4 because of that.
