Default Long tube Headers - Need some advice

Your comments on any/all of my questions would be very appreciated.

1. What brand would you recommend?
2. Ceramic Coated or not?
3. I had the local muffler shop install the stingers & X pipe. They did an excellent job. Should I trust em with the long tubes?
4. Does the install involve taking the engine off the motor mounts?
5. Any comments on how much louder at idle, cuising and WOT?
6. No problem with resonance now...will the long tube headers be a problem on llong highway trips?
7. How much HP gain should I expect?

Thanks

1) I've personally installed FLP's and LGMs and I'd recommend either for sure. The LGM's were a bit nicer and they'll cost a bit more, they wont need coating. I recommend these brands because your stock parts can be set aside so if you ever sell the car, you can remove the headers and put the car back to stock. In addition, since no welding is needed, you can install these yourself in your own garage and save on the $300+ for labor. I should be doing a writeup soon showing how easy it is to install either one of these FLP or LGM headers. I think once people see how easy it is, they'll get headers that dont need welding and end up with a better product for the same price as the others + install costs.

2) Coating is up to you, LGM stainless ones don't need it, the others will most likely come with it.

3) Installing headers is cake. Any shop should be able to do it

4) The ones I've installed didn't.

5) If you leave cats in, a bit louder. If you take the cats out, probably double the volume. It all depends on the combo of the muffler and cats, but its going to be louder.

6) without cats you'll probably get a little more resonance. It'll vary from brand to brand

7) between 15rwhp and 40rwhp, depending on mods and if you put cats in or not.

jmX is correct our headers are made from stainless so will not rust like mild steel and do not need to be coated. However we have a few customers jet hoat coat them for appearance and I must say they brought a teat to my eye. Some of the most beautiful headers I have ever seen. Our system is complete from headers to catback and we have swappable v-flanged straight off road pipes, a 3" x-pipe, and high flow cats. For more information feel free to give us a call to discuss.

I went with the FLP's for I wanted a true bolt-on solution :yesnod: I am truly satisfied with the quality of the product along with the very noticeable added performance increases. One of the benefits that I wasn't even considering when I made my purchase was how the sound on my C5 changed for the better. A deeper and richer one at that! Good luck with your decision...

jmX you mentioned that LGMs do not need coating. It was later mentioned that they are stainless and will not rust like milled steel which may need to be coated.

I had thought that I had read that coating was also done to deal with heat issues. Is this correct. If so how do the LGMs avoid requiring this.

I put Belanger Long Tube Headers on my '00 A4, what a difference in power & sound, much deeper, zero resonance .. very high quality .. Jet Hot coated ... 17-19hp and 19-22trq are typical gains. Normal installation, 4-6 hours (you do not have to disconnect a motor mount) ... only "Tri-Y design with a "pickle". The "pickle" is a device mounted inside each collector, to keep the velocity up, while going through the collector. This increases vacuum, scavenging of the cylinders is more complete, which in turn pulls more of fresh air and fuel back into the cylinder. These really work .. a favorite with "Viper Racers" .. not cheap but very high quality & dependable (I bought some Belangers for a small block chevy 25 years ago) .

Hope I answered all your questions & good luck in making your choice ..

Don,

See you at Bonneville and at the Silver State. There is a small chance I can do the Texas trip but 2200 miles one way...lots of missed work, greater chance of something happening to the car on the way...etc...I'm looking into having the car shipped to Texas & driving home.

See you at the Bonneville 100
