I've been thinking about doing the pcv mod and got to thinking "do i really need it. My 99 FRC is a daily driver. I don't race and don't abuse the car. I do WOT on very rare occasions. The way i understand the pcv mod is it's mainly for people that race or who drive the vette very hard. Is this correct? Thanks for your response in advance.

Maybe this will help. A buddy and I did a head/cam job on my 2002 recently. The engine had only ~2700 miles on it. When we pulled the intake, the interior was soaked with oil. When we pulled the heads, the piston tops had a thick coating of a black, hard epoxy-like material baked on. The intake runners on the heads were also oil-soaked. The car had never been raced and I was pretty easy on it, relatively speaking.
Soon after, we did a similar head/cam upgrade on my buddy's '99 (~13K miles). Same story with his engine.
We both installed PCV mods before running the new h/c setups. I did the GReddy catch tank while he did the compressor filter mod. I'm not getting much oil in mine but my buddy has collected quite a bit.
Hey SEAMORE, from what I have seen this mod can be easily removed with no evidence that it was ever there. So you might do the mod and after a few months you can decide for yourself based on the results that you collect.
While I have not done the mod yet myself, this is the approach that I am considering doing myself since it's a relatively inexspensive modification.
I drive much the same as you do and still get oil in the trap. It's cheap to do, so why not. If you do any WOT runs, even for short distances, I bet you'll get some oil in the trap. Not to mention the condensation I've collected.
Where would I find info on how to do this modification, I run hard once in a while, and the oil is disappearing somewhere. I'm under a consumption test now (fat load of good that does me with 2 feet of snow on the ground...), but it they deem it is "within specs" like they have with every other problem I've had, I will be doing this myself. Thanks!
Thanks for the link, really like the MGD requirement, but I will probably substitute that for a can of Keith's IPA, hope the mod still works that way! :-)
Do you have a Z06? The LS6 engine's layout is different for the PCV than the LS1, so the modification is different. I bought 4 feet of PCV hosing for the modification, and ended up only using 8 inches of it, I re-used the existing PCV parts to optimize the layout. I don't have any place to upload my photos of the mod though, but I can probably email it to you if you like?
Hard driving may not be the issue relative to oil being drawn into the intake. Engine vacuum is highest at cruise, so it would seem that a road trip at small throttle openings might result in more oiling than the banzai stuff.
For the $20.'s it cost to do this why would you not do it ???? It's not a mod that you can't put back to stock in minutes. I'm going to get what I need and see if IndyPace78 will help when the weather is better.
Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the replies and by all means keep your suggestions and thoughts comming. I agree, it's cheap enough, why not do it. I'll round up the parts and do it as soon as i get a chance. To answer another question my car is a LS1 not the Z06. Thanks again.
I finally did it... Not too bad at all....
Better safe than sorry.... If there is no oil in the jar after a few months & some track runs, I may remove it.
But, as I plan to hold on to my car for many years, its a mod I want to have to PREVENT any knocking, pinging or build up later on.
So for now, over the next few months, its staying..
I will report with pics if any oil accumulates...
I have a early 2002 that uses 1 qt every 1000 miles. A lot of oil in the intake. I am currently performing the oil burn test with the dealer. Trying to confirm whether I have the ring update or not. My next step is to perform a non highway cruise test. The limited testing I have performed thus far seems to indicate no oil burning when driving in town at higher rpms. I eventually plan to install the pvc filter mod, then move to 10W30 versus 5W30. Anything to prevent an engine pull.
