Squealing rollers and drive belt.
I recently bought a 98 c5 and since getting it it has starting squealing like a piggy! The rollers that guide the belt that turns the air con unit etc are noisy. I'm unsure which one at this stage but when I apply some oil to them they are quiet for 10 minutes. I'm worried that they may get worse and cause a major failure. The belt seems in good condition. Has anyone had this problem before and how do I rectify it.
Thanks in advance... Marcus
I had this problem at only 20k miles. Even though my belt LOOKED fine, I think it was glazed. I replaced it with a new OEM belt, and it still squealed. I put a Goodyear Gatorback belt on and it's been fine for 6k miles now.
I know of others who had to replace the idler pulley (next to the alternator). There was a TSB about a problem with that on 98's. Mine was OK though I have a 98 too).
I know of one other case where the crank pulley came out of alignment with the others, and I'm not sure what fixed that.
BTW: don't use the belt dressings - they makes matters worse.
Good luck!
I agree that a GoodYear belt is probably a good starting point, however I've also had to replace the tensioner pulleys on both my Camaro and my S-10 pick up somewhere before 30,000 miles. They just don't seem to last.
