got the cam in last Friday. I would have posted earlier, but I had a business trip to Dallas, and just got back.
Well, a little background. The cars an 02 Z, previously only mods were vararam, S2 TB, and magnaflow xpipe with the stock cats. Dyno'd 372rwhp/358rwtq SAE at MTI back on 1-4-03.
Last week, I had MTI install their X1 cam (230/227 dur, .591/.571 lift, 112 ls). I had no headwork, stock ls6 heads. I also had some stainless works headers installed, I kept the stock cats on with the magnaflow xpipe, and kept the stock catback. I also had a pulley installed.
It pulled 405rwhp/385rwtq SAE on the same dyno. I picked up peaks of 33rwhp and 27rwtq. I had the before/after dynos overlayed and it picked up around 35ft lbs from 3800-5000.
Overall, I'm pretty happy. I thought the results were darn good for running through the stock cats. MTI figured it would pull another 15hp/10tq at least with a bigger offroad setup exhaust. I was originally dead set against going catless, but I'm debating that now. The exhaust, even after the headers, is surprisingly quiet. Almost too quiet. I think the stock cats are choking off alot of power. Maybe the random tech midpipe is an option as well, not sure how much they might flow over the stock cats.
I ran out to the track Friday night and pulled over 98mph in the 1/8, and just under 120 in the 1/4. HRP had excellent cold air, but we were running into a headwind. It pulled damn hard on the track. I'm going to have to relearn the launch techinque all over again, the low-end tq is majorily improved. I was frying the 315/35 bfg's on the launch, the 1-2, and the 2-3 was even an adventure. My best et was 11.7 on a 1.88 60ft.
One thing to consider is that GM, removed the precats on the 02 Z06, and went with higher flowing main cats. So your catless, or aftermarket highflow cats, may not produce quite the results your anticipating.
Kind of a bummer, but I only drove the car for one day with the cam :cry I had to go out of town Saturday morning, then when I got back to Houston yesterday, I took the S2 TB off and shipped it to Mark Shaner for a rework. He thinks he can get it to idle a little better and possibly squeeze a couple more ponies out of it since he originally designed my S2 for a stock car.
We shall see. I'm also contemplating a new exhuast system, but not sure if it's really worth it for at most 10 more hp. I think it's pretty cool I busted 400rwhp through the stock heads, stock cats and stock catback!
