Power steering can’t decide to work or not. (2004 base, 30K mi).
Recently did some work that required removing the steering rack. Prior to this the power steering worked perfectly. Reinstalled it, flushed with Prestone power steering fluid, slapped everything back together. I used the engine off, turn the steering wheel side to side routine, and it seemed to flush as expected. Didn’t turn out crystal clear after two quarts, but a lot better than the dark chocolate prior. The picture below is after flushing…
First test drive the steering was wayyyy too easy, like driving a 60’s Lincoln. After going around the block a few times, it settled down and performed normally.
Second test drive started normally, but near the end steering was very heavy, like no power at all. My understanding is that magnasteer is pre-set, or center lined for 45 mph. And at around that speed, the steering does in deed feel fine. So I’m thinking that it’s just not working, like it’s at the default.
