Since I bought this C5 when I drive it for a bit I get the service active handling light come on. Now, I scanned the car and it had the following code C1287 which seems to be related to a steering angle sensor? Anyways, the steering felt very odd and I found out that the steering shaft bolts were loose. I tightened everything up and the steering felt great. The light didn't come back on after resetting this time it took about 45 minutes of driving but, the traction was acting odd then it came on. I have the same code now but I also noticed TPMS codes (C2100,2105,2110,2015) for all sides I don't know if this would cause the active handling light to come on? I don't think it's the ECBM. The previous owner just replaced that before I bought it.
What year and model C5 might make a difference. The TPMS system changed about 2001
Start with your service manual. These pages relate to the left front.
These are from a 2000 service manual. Note at the bottom right a message will be displayed on the DIC but it's not the service active handling message. That could still be set, maybe your service manual has different information.

I am not sure if TPMS would trigger service active handling. Hope someone here could shed more light on that..
It's the steering wheel position sensor. I had the same codes, same symptoms. Replaced the steering position sensor on my 02 Z06 with a GM one and it fixed the C1287 and TPMS codes. EBCM failed twice on me too but that was found to be separate from the C1287.

That looks right. I bought mine from rock auto.
It's not hard to replace. Tape your steering wheel straight. If you have telescoping steering remove the 2 studs for the steering column after the nuts are off. Removing the roof makes it easier too. I had my car up on quick jacks and kneeled next to the car with my side against the door still to get under the dash.

Looks like I have to replace the sensor also, got a 1287 code and active handling light on. Did you need to remove the column from the car or just work under the dash? Thanks, Ed
