I have a 98 Pace Car (active handling) and am in the process of h/c. I'm down to pulling the crank pulley and am trying to remove the bolt so I can get the pulley off. I have active handling, so the module (whatever it is, abs?) in front of the engine is removed and I have no brake pressure. The ebrake is pulled up (for what it's worth, it doesn't ever hold much), and the car is in gear. When I turn the bolt to loosen it, it turns the entire crank pulley and won't remove. What do I need to do to get this off? I've heard maybe there's a way to lock the crank, but I don't know how...
Re: HOW TO PULL THE CRANK PULLEY BOLT! ? ? ? (Roofless)
I've done this 20 times using 4th, 5th should work too. If you have an automatic you'll need to drop the starter and wedge something in against the teeth on the flexplate.

Or, if you've already got the heads off, just take a long screwdriver and wedge it between a piston and it's cylinder wall... :nono: ;) J/K. You might want to wedge the wheels if it's still on the ground.

yeah don't use a screwdriver... use a pry bar :withstupid:
Re: HOW TO PULL THE CRANK PULLEY BOLT! ? ? ? (PaceThis)
Good deal. I put the car in 5th, and set the e-brake. I then took an 18" strong-arm and impact deep-well socket, and then slid half of a hydraulic jack handle (it's like a pipe) over the strong-arm and then gave it a good, swift (well, maybe not swift ;)) pull, and the bolt begrudgingly spun free.

How about the new bolt? Do You rent a big torque wrench (250 ft/lbs) or just get it mega tight?

Thanks everyone for the 5th gear help. It came in very handy when I put the crank pulley back on! I didn't get the big torque wrench, but I'm sure I got to at least 250 lbs putting the first bolt in (30" pry bar). Then I took it out and torque to spec by manual (which didn't require huge torque wrench)...
