Gear changing question
I have a question for you. My friend wants to swap out the gears in his 99 hardtop, but doesn't want to do a core exchange because his car only has 4000 miles. He would be sending a core he knows is perfect and getting one he has no idea of miles, etc. I think he is making perfect sense, so what i need to know is where can you buy just the ring and pinion? Also where can you buy the special tooling that is needed to do this job? We have talked to a few places about this and they said, " well the first few times you put them in you might have to take them back out and readjust cuz they could whine". This is not good craftsmenship, if gears are setup right the 1st time they should never whine. Anyways, I need some help here
thanks guys& girls ;)

They were nice enough to allow me to watch the whole process. Their expert gear installer, Doug, showed me the ideal gear contact pattern that he achieves by adjusting the pinion with shims until it is perfect. He does this with a yellow lead compound.
My housing had 26,000 miles on it, but it looked great inside and out, looked near new to me. They clean everything with a professional cleaning set-up, including the whole differential case inside and out! Then they inspect every little part in great detail as they hand dry it.
They have all the right tools and they make it look easy. I will go back for other things from them as needed, its a good, good, place.
By the way, I am not associated with them in any way, and I paid full price, which I thought was a great deal! Thanks you ECS, I am loving the 3.90's!
